i just assembled my first AMD system this weekend after years of sticking with intel. ive seen the light! LOL anyway, i swapped in an Asus A8N-SLI, Athlon X2 3800, and 7800GT. the rest of my hardware was re-used. im no noob at building PC, been doing it for years but this is the first major problem ive had. twice now, both my dvdrw and cdrw will just disappear. both times happend while a game was installing. the installer stopped and asked to insert disc 1 which was already in there and wouldnt continue. i looked at My Computer and both optical drives are missing. also missing from device manager. a reboot was the only way to get them back. these drives are master/slave on the primary ide channel. i have a 2nd hard drive that is a master on the secondary (main hdd is sata). when the optical drives disappear, the ide hdd still works. also, when this happens, the dvdrw wont open but the cdrw will. prob not relevant.
ive got xp pro sp2. installed the newest nvidia chipset drivers from nvidia but not the storage driver per recommendations i read here at anandtech.
any thoughts on this?? this never happened before. other than this, im liking the amd so far
