New System, New Problems...

Yo Peeps,

I have just bought a new Asus motherboard and other hardware and built a PC.
Everything seems to be OK on the hardware side of things but when i try to
install Microsoft Windows the computer freezes and i cant move the mouse or
do anything. This happens just as Windows has been loaded on (Windows ME)
and when configuring reigonal information (Windows XP) so i do not actually
get to use the operating system before the crash. This happens every single
time at the exact same spot.

There seems to be a hardware conflict somewhere because the system works fine if i use my old HDD (preloaded with Windows ME), and the new HDD works fine on my friend's similar-spec PC.

Hardware:
CPU: P4 2.0GHz Northwood
Memory: 256MB DDR
Motherboard: Asus P4B533-E (RAID)
VGA Card: Gainford GeForce4 Ti-2400 Golden Sample
HDD: Maxtor 40GB ATA133 7200RPM

Extras:
WinTV GO PCI
Diamond SupraExpress 56k
PS/2 Keyboard + Mouse
etc, etc

Does anyone have any clue why this is happening or know any way i could sort this out?
Help pleaz... im going crazy here !

How about you start with only the mobo, CPU, hard disk and vid card? Don't add anything else unnecessary until you have the OS working.

Yo peeps,
Trueness of such caliber hasth not before been spoketh! Troubleshooting is thine divine key that unlocks all mysteries!

E3000, how are you installing Windows XP? Are you booting from the install CD or trying to start the install inside an existing operating system?

Good question

I am installing Windows XP and Windows ME both from the CDs and i am doing it the way i have always done in the past (and the way that mostly everyone else does it too).

That statement was both sad and improper, tsk, tsk, tsk...

E3000 did you try what huesmann suggested? If yes, and you still have problems, its either the CD or your hardware. If the CD works on another computer, it's the hardware. If your hardware is bad, then RMA it.

Yo people,

This might seem strange, but the system seems to run fine when its used OUTSIDE the case !
I tried taking the motherboard and all the bits out the case and running it and it worked a treat... then when i re-mounted the motherboard and attached the EXACT same stuff it wouldnt work again. I tried it outside the case again and it worked again.

Its weird, cos how can the case/housing make a difference? Has anyone ever seen/heard of a situation like this before? There must be more to it than a dodgy case (seeing im using the same power supply inside and out)... can anyone shed some light?
