Okay, I'm expecting some money on my tax refund, and of course that is going to go for a new build.
I have not been keeping up much with technology as I used to be. So I've put a small list of parts witch looks like it could make it into my system, but im unsure if it's the best combo.

Gigabyte GA-P55-UD5

I will be keeping my current videocard (Geforce 9600GT 512mb), because this machine is not intended for gaming, but as a workstation. I like having a medium-high end motherboard with lots of features, although I don't need SLI, I will be running 2 videocard for my multi-display setup. I make really good use of Virtual Machines, so I need plenty of RAM as well. I'm not too sure if I should go with the i7 cpu rather then the i5 cpu yet. Any recommendations or improvement for this build?

Get the P55A series instead, the "A" indicates USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gbps support. For example, this is a really good board. Otherwise it looks good (maybe get another 40GB SSD for RAID), pretty solid build.

As for the i7 vs i5 question, it's widely asked/debated. It comes down to what you do with your computer. Get an i5 if you mainly do Gaming + regular multitasking; buy an i7 if you do heavy video editing + transcoding, as the HyperThreading feature of i7s will benefit those tasks.

you can also get away with a UD3P. what do you need the UD5 for?

True, the UD3P is also great. The only reason I suggested UD4P instead was that UD3P's second PCI-E is 4x only, but UD4P's second PCI-E can run at 8x in CrossFire mode.

The GA-P55A-UD4P looks descent to me. For some reasons I though the motherboard I chose had USB 3.0 and 6gbps sata. Even tho the i7 looks more like the right choice, I think sticking to the i5 can't be that bad. They seems to have similar performance (i7 920 vs i5 750) on tomshardware.

I really like to have a mid-high end motherboard when building a system, the more features, the more I like.

Sure the UD4P has two PCI-E slots but USB 3.0 is disabled when your running SLI/Crossfire apparently.

And if I had another 40GB SSD, wouldn't that remove TRIM support? (assuming I raid them)
