New System: Need Advice

I'm gonna be getting a new computer soon, but I'm having trouble deciding what to get. So, i figure I might as well ask people who know some stuff...

I'm thinking of getting something along the lines of..

A64 3000+ (venice) or 3200 (venice)
Dfi Lp nf4 sli-d or dr
Memory: Unsure, need help with that.
Cooling: Thermalright xp-90C or some sort of water cooling.
Video: Asus X800XL

What I need help with is picking memory that would be suitable for this setup in the following setup:

a) 3000+ w/ watercooling
b) 3000+ w/ Thermalright xp-90
c) 3200+ w/ watercooling
d) 3000+ w/ Thermalright xp-90

I understand the basics of overclocking, HTT and LDT and stuff but I'm still unfamiliar with the A64, so any suggestions and comments on the setup listed above are appreciated.

Thanks,
Mo

3000+ and xp-90. The 3000+ and 3200+ will likely top out around the same speed, and A64's run cool enough, that water cooling isn't really neccesary to get a good overclock.

Don't go with the PQI.....Go with some OCZ value select VX or some platinum EL. Trust me the PQI is nice but you won't want that with this motherboard.

Are the Platinum EL's still recommended even though they may not have the TCCD chips anymore? I'm trying to find out if one of the local retails has the TCCD or TCC5 model. Even if they are TCC5, are they still a good buy?

Current prices im looking at for those two:

OCZ PC3200 2x512 Gold VX - $224
OCZ PC3200 2x512 EL Platinum Rev. 2 - $254

Both prices are in CDN dollars.

Yeah I think most have now switched to TCC5 chips, from what I have seen....yes they are still just as good. I would want to do a bit more research before I buy them though. The Gold VX are very nice, but I don't think the price diference between that and Value VX is worth it.

I think if money is not a problem for you, then go with this This one I know it's expensive but WOW the results with the DFI are amazing. I would also look at maybe the PC4000 VX Gold rather then the PC3200.

Edit:actually looks like the one memory is discontinued now....here is an artical you might like though Great Review

Someone made a similar suggestion about the Gold vx pc3200 dimm's but also said that my OCZ Modstream 520 W PSU wouldn't be able to up the vdimm voltage very high. I'm wondering if anyone knows how high the modstream can take the vdimm??

Thanks,
Mo

if you are spending that much on RAM, you better be getting 2 gigs. low latency doesnt do jack for the athlon64, so dont waste your money

DFI + OCZ = 😀

3000+ for the CPU. They oc basically the same amount (around 2.8 GHz).

With A64 you can go a long way on air cooling. Either the XP-90 or a Zalman HSF will do the job nicely just use some Arctic Silver 5 on it.

If your getting a SLI board don't get the X800XL get a 6800GT so you will be able to run SLI in the future if you want otherwise go with DFI Lan Party nF4 Ultra.

Hmm... Thanks for that link. I didn't realize the difference it made... i was mainly getting good ram so it wouldn't be the bottleneck of my overclock, but hey, i got no problems with using a divider and some value ram 🙂
