New "System Name" for router?

Hey. I've been having some problems with my switchover to the new, "improved" cable internet system with the @home bankruptcy. This has mostly been taken care of in other threads, but my one major problem with my router still remains:

My router, though all settings should be correct, still cannot get through to the internet provider, I believe because I still have the wrong "System Name." This is within option 1 of the Netgear RT314 routers. I always had this one "system name," which was listed as a "DNS name" on my @home installation sheet, which I needed to use in this field. (It has the format xx000000-x, where x=letter and 0=number) Now, with the switchover, the new company refuses to give me the new name. Is there any way I can find this? I found the Domain Name through ipconfig in WinXP. The router still can't connect with this old name, though. I think that's the only thing wrong. Thanks for the help.

P.S. If I remember right, I originally found this name through winipcfg in Win98... Can't get my one Win98 machine to access the internet, though.

send yourself an email and look at the mail headers, go to a web site you run and check out the web logs, hop on IRC and do a /whois on yourself, etc. you just need to grab that hostname and dump it into your router config 🙂

Thanks. Just to confirm before I cut access to myself and dump it in the router...

I went in IRC and got this...

KnickNut3 is KnickNut3@xxx000000xxx.(my subdomain) * KnickNut3

where x is a letter and 0 is a number...

xxx000000xxx is what I put in my System Name, right?

Sorry about the code... just not sure if it's unsafe to put that information out...

Sounds good thanks... while we're at it... it never changed in 2 years on the old system. They say on this new system everything will be dynamic. Will these be dynamic as well? Will I have to reconfigure the router often, or will just the IPs be dynamic? The tech support lady was a bitch, so I wasn't sure if she was just screwing with me or if that's what my cable company wants me to think - that I can't use a router...

yeah they'll probably use real DHCP with short leases. Configure your router to grab its IP via DHCP.

Damn! The router still can't find an IP, even after I put it in right! UGH!

I guess another setting must be wrong somewhere. I'll leave it plugged in overnight to try to find it. If not, I'll call my friend who helped me set it up. See if there's anything I can do. Thanks.
