Hey peeps,

Im hoping you can help me. I've just bought an Asus motherboard along with some other parts to build a friend a PC. I am having some problems getting it all working, so was wondering if anyone acn help?!

The parts I have bought are:

AMD Athlon XP2700 333FSB 256Cache Retail Boxed Inc Heatsink & Fan
Kingston 256MB 400MHz DDR Non-ECC CL3 (3-4-4) DIMM
Asus A7V8X-X SKT A KT400 8x AGP DDR Sound/lAN/USB 2.0

Obviously there are many more parts but these are the essiential ones.

My problem is, when i turn the pc on the fan spins fine - although you can hear it slow down every two second or so - and then after about 5 seconds the whole pc turns off. Things to note are:

there are no beeps from the speaker, although it sounds like its trying to beep - a ticking noise
the PSU is fine, it powers other mobo's and if i use another power supply I have the same problem
When i plug in the pc to the mains, it turns on automatically. The power button on the case doesnt always have an affect and doesnt turn the pc off.
Its not the RAM as it does the same with no RAM inserted
As far as i know all the jumpers are set correctly, but i am open to suggestions here..

Do you think the motherboard is faulty? Should I send it back?!
Any help would be great.

Ps. I have built many pc's before and not had this problem...grrr. If you need some more info let me know and i will post it.

try a different cpu, and make sure the board isnt gorunding itself out on something in the case . just use the cpu ram agp card and psu to see if you get it to post and swap one part at a time

well I had this problem before with a mobo ... thing wouldn't post at all.

If you take everything off the mobo (all PCI, AGP etc) and just turn the PC on with the CPU and no RAM then the mobo should still give you beeps. If it isn't responding at all then I would think the mobo to be a DOA or maybe like the person above said it is being shorted from something. If it did short then you might have damaged something ... :(

if you have anouther PC handy then try all the components in that PC and see if everything is working ... then you can rule out things.

Sounds like a bad ground, mis placed wire, or the heat sink isn't being placed right on the cpu.

I've come across this problem alot. Its the motherboard, RMA it before the warranty runs out. If its already too old you gotta get another one. If it doesn't beep no matter what you do with all IDE devices disconnected and RAM out of the sockets, its done. If its ticking, that could be the leads on he PSU connected wrong, in turn frying the mobo.

Ah, thanks for all of your advice!

You will be pleased to know that I now have it all working...

The heatsink wasnt sitting properly on the CPU, and I used some heat gel/paste stuff as well. It said I didnt need it when first applying the heatsink so i didnt bother...

OK, so its not working completely yet! Now what happens is i press the power switch, it all powers up for about 2 seconds then resets, then powers up and works fine with no problems!

I havnt wired in the reset switch yet...thats next on my list

Any body got any ideas why its resetting after 2 secs?!
