new system is slow starting up and shutting down?

ok i just built my brother a new system, and everything seems to be running smoothly except during startup and shut down. when booting up, the system moves through IDE device and IRQ detection just fine, but as soon as that's done and the text goes away, the screen stays blank for about 30 sec. before the winXP loading screen shows up, at which point it takes just a few seconds for windows to load completely and everything seems to be up to speed again. but those 30 sec. w/ a blank screen shouldnt happen. also, i haven't witnessed this myself yet, but my brother is telling me that its taking between 1 and 5 minutes to actually shut down (i've restarted it and experienced no real serious delays, but i never shut it all the way down and cold booted it). obviously this shouldn't be happening either. i don't know if these two problems are related or not, but i'm hoping for some insight into both from the forums...thanks.

system
P4 2.4C on an Abit IS7 (not OCed yet for troubleshooting purposes)
1GB Corsair TwinX 4000PT (2 x 512MB)
WD1200JB hard drive
ATI 9800pro 128MB built by Sapphire
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card

i figure these items are the major contenders, but if you need more system info such as optical drives, please request it.

thanks again...eric

Well, there's a few things you can try:

1) Make sure to get the Intel Application Accelerator drivers.

2) Make sure you've got the latest IDE drivers for your board. Long boot-up/shut-down times for Windows are often because of IDE drivers.

3) Check out Black Viper's Windows tweaks AT YOUR OWN RISK. There's a lot of tips in there on how to edit your registry and Windows services to reduce the amount of overhead Windows uses while running and shutting down. Its been a while, but I believe there's a few services settings and user profile settings that slow Windows down as it tries to clear temp files. I believe there's another setting that tells Windows to clear the page file....among other tweaks. Just be real careful and be sure to document any changes as well as back up your registry.

4) Try putting your page file on a different drive (preferably a static partition) from your OS.

G'luck.

well i loaded the chipset drivers that came on the CD w/ the mobo, but i'll check the website for any updates. now i also have an IS7 in my machine, and i also installed the drivers from the CD and i don't recall if i've updated them or not. but even between original drivers and updated ones, i've never experienced delays on my system like i do on my bro's. now i only have a P4 1.6A and some old DDR333 mem in my system, but who knows...
