I have $1000.

I already have a case w/psu, display, keyboard, mouse and OS. I need:
A hard drive (1TB would be nice)
Motherboard
3 GB Ram
The fastest quad core in the price range, with hsf
a graphics card (can be mid range -- this will not be a gaming machine)
19" LCD, I wouldn't object to upgrading to 21 or 22.
A wifi card

So $1000 for those pieces. I'm not keen on finding deals, so I don't mind buying everything through newegg, I just need to know what to buy... what's the best system I can build for this price?

Thanks!

I'd go for one of those 640 WD drives if you want speed plus you get almost all 640 of that drive...
Get a 4850 (help support AMD/ATI) you see what they did to Nvidia keeping the prices better for us consumers. (its us vs them ladies and gents, not fanboy wars)
I bought my 4870 today jfyi
I'd suggest a P45 chipset with a Q9450 and of course it being a DDR2 board some nice good ole sweet-spot 1066 for your overclocking adventures.

Sorry if you were looking for someone to price things out for you but from the top of my head 200 for gpu, 300 for cpu, 100 for drive 120 for 4gb RAM, maybe 150 for mobo. That should cover about all of it cept a wifi card, and you may find a wi-fi board; all being in the ball park ...

I've been scorned by amd in the past, and ATI display drivers leave something to be desired.

Sorry to contradict, but I'd prefer Intel/NVIDIA

1. The 4850 is more than he needs to spend, and runs too hot to be a card that you toss in if you don't need the gaming performance. He doesn't need to spend $200 on a graphics card.

2. OP, what do you need your PC to accomplish? If you're just looking at documents all day and you're sure you won't be playing games, you could shoot very low on the graphics card. For that matter, are you sure the applications you'll be using take advantage of four cores? Not all do.

3. 1066 RAM is not the sweet spot, so I'm not sure what you're talking about BTRY B. He hasn't stated that he plans to overclock, but even if he does, DDR2-1000 is just fine and is often noticeably cheaper. RAM should cost him less than $90.

4. OP, if your needs are basic in terms of motherboard features, you could go with something like an entry-level P35 board and save some cash while losing nothing in performance. The two main features of P45 - allowing PCI-e 2.0 and Crossfire - aren't going to matter to you.

BTRY, he doesn't need a gaming system, so don't mislead him into building one.

I tend to agree with this post, and the bolded question should be answered before system recommendations are made...

Even roguerower's list has you spending more than you need to on graphics. If you really aren't doing anything graphically intensive, the video card should cost you less than $100 without a doubt. Again, it would be very helpful to know what the PC is actually going to be used for.

I would think that if he's looking for a fast quad then it's got something to do with number crunching. I know the system i put together is expensive but it has newer tech which should allow it to last a bit longer than an older (P35, etc) system.

Apparently the purpose of this machine is a highly classified government secret. ;)
