New system hangs at the splash screen

I just put together a new system using wdws 98se, msiK7T, AMD850tbird. All installed well until I added a few items like extra screen savers, system tools and such. Now on every bootup it stalls the wdws splash screen. The bottom of the screen is active, but it doesn't boot into wdws. I have ctrl-alt-del & boot into safe mode. Any leads that can help me track this problem down?.....thanks.
