New system gives no feedback

Hello,

I received all of the parts for a new system today and after putting it together and pressing the power button I get... very little.

All of the leds seem to be working, the fans are all spinning, I can even hear the hard drive working. The problem is that my monitor is not receiving a signal from the video card. I'm also getting no beeps, so I am not getting any feedback to help find the problem.

The relevant (I think) bits of hardware that the machine uses are:
ASUS P5SD2-X Socket T (LGA 775) SIS 656 ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel Pentium D 805 Smithfield processor
and an eVGA Geforce 6800.

I really have no idea as to how to narrow down the problem. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Check your motherboard installation. It might be possible that the motherboard is grounding somewhere. Are all your components brand new?

Everything is new but the hard drive and cd-rom. How would I be able to tell if the motherboard is grounding? If it were grounding, would the fans still be spinning?

Thanks.

Yeah, everything would turn on..just no beeps and no video. Also, you did clear the CMOS upon the finish of the installation? I'm sure resetting the CMOS isn't going to help but it's worth a try.

Now, if you run into this again, when in doubt, dismantle the computer and reinstall everything again.

I'll try clearing the CMOS before going to sleep then I'll try doing everything over again tomorrow (if the first part fails).

Thanks.

Your motherboard requires BIOS version 0501 to support that CPU, if it's using an older bios, that is more than likely your problem. My asus motherboard did the same thing yours is doing with my 920 until I updated the bios(fortunatly I had an older P4 that was supported to boot with so I could flash the bios).

It could also be a shorted motherboard as already mentioned.

Try booting with the bare minimums(cpu/heatsink and fan, 1 stick of ram, video card, disconnect everything else such as hard drives, cd/dvd drives, any other PCI card etc.)

If it still doesn't boot, try removing the motherboard from the case, putting it on a non-conductive surface, and trying again with the bare minimums. If the power switch wire doesn't reach that far out of the case, you can use a screwdriver to touch together the 2 pins where the power switch connects to turn it on.

If it still doesn't work, more than likely it's because you need the newer version of BIOS.

So, if all I have lieing around is a socket 478 p4, is there any way for me to flash the bios?

nope, you'll either have to borrow a CPU or contact asus and see if they can do it for you.
