New system for Sony Vegas Pro 9.0

Hello. Again. I am building a system for some light to moderate use of Sony Vegas Pro 9.0. Going into this, I had some very noob misconceptions about how systems are built and believed that a powerful GPU would help me in this regard.

In the Video Cards and Graphics forum, people quickly corrected my mistaken ways, explaining why a GPU would not help me with my issues (i.e., laggy and slow preview pane in Sony Vegas).

I am currently using a quad-core processor with decent ram and HD, but for some reason, it's not working well. People suggested that I ensure that multi-threading is enabled and that my drivers are up to date. Ok. I will. But first, I'm thinking of making a new build.

Can someone more knowledgeable than me in this field (almost everyone), please advise as to whether this build is sufficient to endure light/moderate Sony Vegas Pro 9.0 and produce a crisp preview pane where I can scrub through my 1080p videos and otherwise use the program without any hangups? My primary issue is not with rendering. Rather, whenever I am trying to view the video in the preview pane, I have to set it to the absolute lowest setting/resolution in order to get a real time playback, otherwise it is choppy and degraded.

I'd do a complete rebuild with an i7 rig. Also helps to have video on it's own dedicated HDD in my opinion. I doubt it improved performance but it keeps everything better organized.

I have a Q6600 and I am able to work with the video from my sony avchd video camera just fine. It is 1080i and uses x264.

What is your cpu usage like with vegas closed? How much ram do you have? I have 4GB ddr2.

Hmm. I also have 4gb DDR2. I must have set something up wrong. The only difference is that I'm using 1080p from a Canon HSF10. But, that shouldn't make the difference in performance that I'm seeing?!?

I personally always have laggy performance in the preview pane of Sony Vegas. I think it is the program itself to some extent.

I'm not sure what you mean by laggy. Do you mean it lags to start a video or lags throughout? Do you have the preview pane set to "Auto"? Are you using the 64 bit version of Vegas Pro?

I have an i7 920 running at 3.6Ghz with HT enabled. Vegas does use HT, I max out all "eight" cores regularly. When previewing a 1080p video, if I have the preview set to "full" it will lag and my CPU usage will spike to 100% on all eight cores. With it set to "auto" I use 3 cores and no more than 15% on each of the 3.
