New system: EDIT - got the 8RDA+

Is it the 8RDA+ or what?

I want to build a cruncher that gets me some sub 2hr WU's (right around 2 hr is ok too)

My ASUS mobo is nice & I wouldn't trade it but now I want to build another one that really screams.

TIA 😉

Also, what ram is best with the 8RDA+??

Put it this way, I could get a Tbred b 1700+ and 8RDA+ for $125 shipped
OR I could get a ASUS A7N8X (standard) for $65 and a 1700+ b for about $50 so that would be $115 - $120 with shipping.

Also looking at the $70 video card market... (looking for something better than my old GF2)

For about $70 at Newegg they have:

SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON 9200 64MB

MSI AGP Video card Geforce Fx 5200 Model X5200-T64

CHAINTECH Geforce FX 5200 64MB DDR

Leadtek NV34 Geforce FX5200 NV34 8XAGP 64MB

Gainward FX5200, 8X AGP, 64MB

I'd go with the 8RDA+ (have had nothing but good experiences with my 8RDA non-plus), and of course the Sapphire ATI video card. Also, stay the fvck away from Kingston RAM, especially ValueRAM. I got some, and you definitely get what you pay for. This stuff that I have is rated PC2700, but it won't runn at 166MHz without a ton of errors in memtest86, and many BSODs in Windows. :|

THanks, I was thinking either Hyperx or Corsair XMS PC3200 or PC3500

So the Sapphire is the best of that lot eh?

Well, for 2D IQ it is (and that's what matters to me). For gaming, some of the Nvidias might be better, but I've not checked the benchmarks lately to know what's going on in that arena.

I do not know about the 3200 HyperX but I was unable to get past 190FSB running in dual channel with 2x512 pc3500 hyperX. Put it is single and ran my 1700+ 10.5x215 with 2-2-2-7 timings. My setiqueue showed an average of 2:12 wu time.

Well I found this:

The TwinMOS module I'm selling is a Winbond BH-5 which I have been able to run stably in my systems (all of which are EPOX 8RDA+'s) in dual channel at 208 MHz fsb.. when run in single channel, I hit as high as 218 MHz.. unfortunately my boards would not go higher than 220 MHz for some reason, so I could not test this memory that high.

So I am buying it from him. Sounds pretty nice 😉

Let's hope it does better in your 8RDA+ 😉

3 of my 4 systems run with those same modules from TwinMOS.. FSB ranges from 200 - 208 MHz dual channel 🙂

Twinmos works great with the 8RDA+! I have one stick of PC3200 running at 210FSB merrilly crunching away.....

Go for the ATI Radeon 9200. The GF FX5200 is worse than a GF4MX, or if not worse, definately VERY close. The 9200 is better in every way than any of the others you listed 🙂

The 4200 and 9200 are approximately the same level of performance, with the 4200 faster without AA/AF, but the 9200 will be faster with AA/AF.

Depends on whether you want to use AA or AF when playing games 🙂

I guess I'd go with the 8RDA+ simply because that is what I recently bought. It seems to work great except for the passivly coolde northbridge with gets very hot to the touch.

If you get the A7N8X rev 2.0, you are guaranteed DDR400 performance for the future (200fsb Bartons and such). Something to think about. BTW - I wasn't able to get over 185 stable on my 8RDA+, but I have NP running 200 on my new A7N8X Deluxe Rev 2.0. (default voltage). Haven't tried any higher, but I'm sure there is more room if I upped the vdd and core voltages.

Hi Wiz
Must be the season for buying😉

I've just ordered an XP2000 'B' core (as well as a 120Gb 8Mb WD HDD & Liteon 52x24x52 CDR😀) to replace the XP1800 'A' core I have in my 2nd rig.
I'm surprised you managed to get an XP1700 ,none of my usual places list them anymore ,slowest XP available is the XP1800 which is only a few quid cheaper than the 2000😕 ,so I thought I'd go for the 2000 for a better resale value.

I'm hoping the XP2000 will hit around 2.2 GHz! 😀

Btw no idea about your questions!😱

I'm also considering the Epox 8RGA+ that has the integrated GF4MX graphics.
Newegg has it for $99 shipped. I know GF4MX isn't the best out there but it's a bit better than what I already have.
The main thing I don't know about this is if it is as good an overclocker as the 8RDA+.

Maybe you can try to get an Abit NF7-S, they can reach very high FSB's.
Don't know if they are more or less expensive in the states. In Holland, it's about the same as epox or asus.
