You might have noticed I've been posting a lot regarding laptops lately. Well, instead of buying a $2000+ laptop, I decided to get a more powerful $1200 desktop and compliment it with a $800 cheap laptop. I don't game at all. My primary use will be video editting:

P4 3.0C
1GB Crucial DDR400
Asus P4P800-VM (Micro ATX)
NEC 16X Dual Layer DVD+/-RW
WD 160GB 8MB
Antec Aria w/ 300W PSU
Onboard Sound & Video

Samsung 170N LCD
Logitech MX700 Mouse
Generic Keyboard
Altec Lansing ADA745 4.1 Speakers

System comes to $1200

What do you guys think??

seems fine, but do you need that sff case? Otherwise i would get a p4p/c800 (or abit ic-7/is-7) and a cheap separate graphics card... like a radeon 7000 or a gf2mx. Otherwise, the onboard will use system ram.

Hmm, no I dont require SFF. But I'm only going that route cuz it's cheaper. I'm trying to cut back on $ if I don't think it's necessary.

Hmmm, I will think about that though. What's a good quiet (well, not loud) ATX case and PSU that I can use? (Under $110 total? - don't want to add anymore to the current cost)

Looks like a good setup. You could save a few bucks by going with Corsair RAM over the crucial. I dont really think there is a need for Crucial and they usually a bit overpriced. Also, how about an 8x DVD+-RW? Save some cash there too?

lmao, a 7000? Just get a Radeon 9700 Pro instead, these boards are just awesome. Do not forget, during last years E3, John Carmack picked the 9700 Pro to run the Doom 3 demo on.

I know so you dont game, but the 9700 Pro is amazingly cheap and has awesome features

WTF, yeah amazing features that will never be used....

However if it were me I'd still get a dedicated video card for DVI and increased 2D quality, I think the Radeon 9000 series is good for this.

The Antec Sonata is prolly the best quiet ATX case with a good PSU for under $100.

For video editing I can name a couple of things you need to change:

More ram. Get at least 2GB. I have 1GB and it's killing me.
More hard drive space. I would also add a 250 GB hard drive to that 160.

Overclock that proc :)

Since when was Corsair cheaper than Crucial? I always thought of Crucial as cheap not super high performing but reliable, and Corsair as over the top performance w/ extra price for the name brand.

Those Radeon 9700 Pro are like gems, they consume little power and are cheap.

Heck, why not? heck why not go with integrated graphics??

Im just recommending a great graphics card to him, so maybe, just maybe he can utilize it with a game or two ...

Still, game or no game, get this one
