new system config?

I am building a new system with two Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 10 250GB SATA hard drives in a RAID 1 and I had an old 40GB that I thought I would throw in using the IDE cable. Would I hinder performance by installing Windows XP Pro on this 40 GB hard drive?I also have a DVD rom and a Plextor 716 DVD burner that I think I should assign as masters on seperate channels for disc to disc copying. Is this correct? If so that means my 40 would have to be a slave on one of the channels so this might not be the best place to install my OS. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I didn't think it was possible to install your OS to a slaved drive.

But yeah, you'll probably hurt Windows loading times by putting it on a slow drive. Why are you RAID-1 on your 250s?

I thought that a RAID-1 would keep me from loseing all of my data in case of a hard drive failure. I have a 60GB drive that is stuck in park with GB's of my photos on board. Since then I got an external drive that I back up my entire pc on but that is a pain. I thought I would simplify things with a RAID 1 in my new system. What am I missing?

But raid-1 will only help you if one of your drives fail. if your computer is destroyed/stolen/fried/infected you will still lose all of your data. An external drive on the other hand will usually be okay in these situations.

RAID 1 is a good idea if you're trying to defend against data loss due to HD mechanical failure.

You can install windows on a slave drive, but I wouldn't recommend using the 40GB drive, simply because it will be slower and generally hinder your computer's performance.

I think you should stick with the two SATA HDs and leave it at that.

Edit: I assume the 40 GB drive is slower because you said that it's older. What are the specs of this 40GB drive (RPM, seek time, etc.)?

I am more concerned with mechanical failure, however I will continue to externally backup photos and such. I have no idea of the specs on the 40GB. I was just looking for a reason to install it in my new system because it was just collecting dust. This is my first build and I may be making it more difficult than it should be.
