New system built, CPU running at 34 DEG C, but HS cool

Hi,
Having just built my first system, I'm abit concerned about the heatsink
temp,It's only about 22 deg c, and the CPU is running at 34 deg c.
I find this abit strange, as all my other PC's Heatsinks get very hot. This
one is cool to the touch.
The CPU is a P 4 1.7. with standard H/S and Fan
What do you think?

But the temperature reading comes from a temp gauge that is located beneath the cpu right?
Maybe the fan on your heatsink just blows the heat away.
Your observation is quite odd for me too because even if I get my Athlon 850 down to temps of 27 C I'd touch the sink and feels a liitle hot... very little. Maybe that's what you're feeling too.

Hi,
The idle temp is 34, loaded it goes to 39 DEG C.
the readings are coming off the Mobo.If I hadn't fitted the H/S right, could this be giving me these strange readings?

Depending on the mobo the temp is probably coming from the onboard the thermal diode that is in the chip and it reads higher than thermal diodes that only touch the chip because its in the middle of it.

Your temps are fine, I wouldn't worry about it at all.

The P4's temps are all read from the CPU Internal Diode. Also, 34 degrees is a VERY VERY GOOD temperature. My P3 900 runs at 30-40 degress under load.

body temp is 37C. if your core is 34C, it would feel a little warm, and your heatsink wouldn't really feel warm at all 🙂
your temps are good
