Hi,

I am trying to build a new system, which will need to run 2 or 3 virtual machines. After reading many forums and threads, I came to the conclusion that it is much more important to get more RAM that buy the latest DDR3 RAM.

Today, I would buy the following system. Could you please tell me what you think? Thinking about future upgrades, do I really need a 750W or a 610/650W?

Please do not look at the budget, since I am not paying for it :)

- Ultra-120 eXtreme Papst U-Silent - 120 mm
- OCZ Memory 2x 2GB KIT PC2-8000 Platinum-Series XTC, DDR2, CL5-5-5-18, 1000MHz, 240Pin (total 8GB)
- ASUS Maximus Formula, ATX, Intel X38, FSB 1333MHz, Intel S775, 4xDDR2 1333MHz, PCI-E 2.0, C2Q
- Sapphire Radeon HD4870, 512MB DDR5, 750Mhz, ATI Radeon HD4870, PCI-E 2.0, 2xDVI, 2xVGA, AVIVO
- Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 (2667) Quad Core, Sockel 775, Intel, 2x6MB Cache, 1333MHz FSB
- DVD BluRay BD-6x4x HDR3x +16x8x4x -16x6x4x, SATA Anschluß, LightScribe, Farbe: schwarz, Retail NMS
- P182 Gun-Metal Black Quiet no PSU / 4x 5.25" 1x 3.5" ext. / 6x 3.5" int MSD
- PC Power+Cooling NT Silencer 750Watt, ATX2.2, 6x SATA, 8x Molex, Quad Cossfire Ready

Thanks a lot.
Mike

From what I've read on the subject in brief - DDR3 RAM (sticks - not on vid cards) is still 'new' and as such can expect teething problems.
Can't see that there is more than 1 or 2% gain either.
Stick with DDR2 for now imvho.

Are you using this machine for gaming, work, or both? I'm just a little bit confused by a few things. You're running virtual machines and don't have to pay for the computer, which suggests work machine to me. But you also have overclocking RAM, an enthusiast motherboard and a gaming graphics card, which suggest a gaming computer.

Hi,

I get the money from my parents, but I also the machine for my private (small) business, and sometimes I like to play games...

I want to get a machine that can handle both situations and, if possible, future upgrades too.
