$500 for a pure gaming system? If you want to play games like Sim City 1, then $500 will do.

I suggest that you save up a little more and at least spend around $1300. Spend a little more and it will save you a lot of heartache in the future.

As for specs you should probably go for at least an Athlon 64 3200+, 1 GB of RAM, and a Geforce 6600 GT.

That is my rig, and i still feel inferior when i think of the S939 boards and the faster processors.. i know i shouldnt as my rig is pretty decent but i still feel that way =/

for $500 you can get a good motherboard, CPU , ram, and decent video card

Socket 754 Athlon 64 2800 + motherboard run for ~$200 USD
1 Gig of DDR RAM run for ~$170
RADEON 9800PRO run for ~$200

exceeded budget for a bit, u can trim down the 512 DDR RAM for upgrade later, but i would recommend 1 Gig

the case, harddrive, CDROM/DVD ROM u would need to chip from ur old system

you might able to trim down athlon 64 to athlon XP, but i wouldn't recommend it

Oh, I was thinking without all the extra stuff. But if the case, PSU, and HD are decent, $500 will do for a good set of upgrades.

do you have any parts left over from a previous system? i have a nice system in mind if you have a HDD, monitor, some fishing string and a few fish.

Generic case/psu: $40
AXP 2500+ $65
HDD(40-60gb): $50
512mb kingston/ocz pc3200 ram: $70
NF7 mobo: $70
Liteoncdrw: $30
9800p: $175

This is considering u get these good deals. The 9800p can be found today for this price, the processor maybe a bit more but i think u can save a few bucks on some of the other components. Also, if u have a cd drive, u can spare $30 and get a good psu (antec, etc) for around that price if u find a good deal.

Just like the early release of the 6800u? As much as uve proven to be knowledgable, id assume that by now u'd be as fed up as i am w/ these "release dates".
-Summary: Dont rely on tomarrow's hardware for today's purchase

I could find the pci-ex version pretty easy after the initial release.

I do however see a lack of supply since everyone and their brother is waiting on the agp version.

I'd still wait though, and which ever came out first between the x700xt and the 6600gt, well that would be the one i would purchase.

It seems to me that it is beter to talk about what is avalable in the hear and now instead of speculateing on products that don't even have release dates.

I am definitely parting CD0-RW, Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse, DVD and if I don't land an Nforce platform, then my Sound card as well.

Included in new rig I need: Case, Mobo, RAM, PS, HD, Vid Card.

I was also wondering. If I spent the money now to get a really nice case (and one that I have wanted for a while) will it be compatible with new hardware down the road, say a couple of years?
The case is a Lian Li PC65B

Keep on building!

Why dont you just save and wait for Nforce 4. Then you can sell your Soundcard 🙂 . Anyways i personally would wait and save.
