Ok, this is what I'm planning to build for my first computer:

Case and Power Supply:
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=140025

CPU:
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80809

Motherboard:
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=240335

RAM:
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=85016-33

Video Card:
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=324501

I am planning on using my existing optical drives, floppy drive, keyboard, mouse and monitor. In addition, I'm planning on using the onboard sound included with my motherboard, unless my budget permits me to add an Audigy2 ZS.
I mostly am going to use this system to play counterstrike and city of heroes. Please feel free to make any suggestions on my configuration. Thanks for any suggestions; please help me in any way you think you can.

Have you thought about AMD64? Or perhaps skt478 Intel? Skt775 is a huge waste of money right now. You could build a rig that's 10X better on those platforms.

EDITed for spelling.

I agree. It's a deifnitely a waste of money, especially for what your using it for...

Sonic587, I thought about it. However, my dad promised to pay for it and he is a hardcore Intel fan. In addition, he has stated that it MUST be socket 775 since it has the support of PCI-Express. But thanks for your suggestions.

I am sorry, but have your father look at this thread.

Anybody who buys 775 right now is a fool. Especially if you will be gaming. With the money you could save from going with another platform, you could be getting atleast a vanilla 6800. That would blow the X600XT out of the water.

PCI-E for graphics cards is a gimmick. Nothing more, nothing less. In many cases, it is slower than AGP due to driver immaturity.

agreed.

anything other than the Athlon64 is a bad purchase. tell your dad he is flat out wrong.

BTW, that video card is awful.

i can EASILY build you a better rig for over $100 less. what a friggin waste....:|

Exactly..a crappy card put in a PCI Express slot doesn't make it good...

If I added up what you're buying coreectly, you'll be spending around $1,200, right?

Now, look what I threw together on newegg for about the same price.

A64 3400+
2X512MB Mushkin 3200 RAM
eVGA 6800 GT
EPoX EP-8KDA3J nForce3-250Gb
Fortron 530W Power Supply
SB Audigy 2 ZS
your choice of case...

That all comes out a little more than what you're spending, and it will blow that rig above out of the water for gaming. And it's well more than you need for general websurfing and multitasking.

that ram is too much money. at newegg you can get 2 512 sticks of mushkin 3200 for $140

that case and PSU is overkill. what happened to the sonata?

ok. Good idea, ram is definitely too expensive. I might actually go with Kingston memory now since my friend has a coupon for 40% if I purchased from Kingston.com So I'd probably save $200 by taking your suggestions. Thanks for your ideas

*EDIT*
I meant my friend has a coupon for 40% OFF Kingston memory as long as its purchased from Kingston.com

Nick is correct on all of the above. With that money saved you are close to 6800 GT territory.

I'm going to add that right now, it's not the best time to go with sk939. AMD is having supply problems with the 3500+, and the price has risen quite a bit. MSRP is about $350. If you can fit the inflated prices into your budget, that's ok, but you will get a better price as soon as AMD meets the demand. Just keep that in mind.

thanks for all of your help, sonic587. By the way, how long do you think it would take for AMD to meet its demand?

It's hard to say. Maybe a week or two. Like I said, if you can fit it into your budget now, great.

I wouldn't say that exactly.

Granted that S775 with all the new fangled DDR2 and PCIe support it brings to the table at the moment is pretty much a senseless waste of money, but in my opinion, S478 platforms at present really can be used to setup a very good gaming rig, with an excellent price : performance ratio.

And as someone else pointed out, S939 isn't exactly all THAT either. For one it's pretty damn expensive, but of course you pay for performance and quality, but that doesn't matter anyway if you aren't that concerned about the cost.

I for one for my next upgarde will defo be taking the S478 route to bridge the gap between the present technology and the future that is being shaped by DDR2 and PCIe >>> but defo not things you need to be concerned with at the present.

X600XT PCI-E?!?

WOW....just....wow.

Over $200 on a card based on the 9600Pro.
