New System Build won't Post

Hi,

I recently purchased and received from Newegg:

AMD 1100T processor
Asus M5A97 board
4x8 gig sticks of G.Skill Ripjaws X ram (it was 4 sticks in a kit)

So I plug all this stuff in (was very careful to make sure that the golden triangle lined up) and also had salvaged:

HIS HD5770
Sound Blaster Audigy 2
74 gig WDC Raptor HD
Corsair HX520 (is kind of old, but it was working perfectly fine the 10 minutes before I turned off the old computer to attempt this upgrade)

I put the computer on- and I see the Asus Splash screen for about half a second and then the memory check screen (which I noticed shows all 32 gigs recognized along with my hard drive). Then I notice the screen goes black and I see the "Analog/Digital" pictures come up on my Samsung 245BW monitor as if the monitor went off. No beeps, fans keep running, and it sounds like something is still running the whole time.

I have turned it on several times to take note of all the stuff that the memory check screen registers:

It recognizes the CPU as a Phenom IIX6 1100T
It recognizes all the ram
It recognizes my hard drive

I have visited the Asus forum and saw a thread saying to yank all the ram out and see if the beeps happen or not... no beeps but I don't know if my speaker would have been plugged in or not since I didn't see a jumper in my batch for one. Thus I heard nothing. I also tried the suggestion to leave only the ram stick that is in the A2 position in and press the MemOK! button. I did that, saw the splash screen and then it went black with the same "Analog/Digital" pictures coming up. I've tried removing some of the ram and each time it does detect however much I left inside. I've also tried yanking all of the ram and putting in 1/2/3 sticks of OCZ Gold ram that I've had (definitely works from the old days when I used them) and that registered as well. Same black screen deal though.

I can't get into the BIOS because of the black screen problem. Monitor is plugged into the 5770 via a single DVI plug and it was working perfectly fine from before I shut the machine down to upgrade. Keyboard seemed to be working (lights were on).

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Edit: I'm also not sure how to remove the heatsink. I had some difficulty getting it in tight and am rather afraid that pulling on the "tab" with force will result in it breaking thus causing more problems. This is the stock cooler I refer to.

I would first suspect the PSU, but when the rest of the components are taken into consideration your system isn't too stressed and that should be enough power.

Have you checked to make sure all the headers are connected correctly - USB, sound, etc?

The USB is in right, as the case and rear USB ports are fully functional (the keyboard lights up during the second that the computer is on). Sound.. I don't know. I have a card so I typically ignore the onboard sound plug.

I see quite a few people on Newegg saying this board is pretty picky on RAM. Have you looked at the memory support PDF on the Asus website to make sure your RAM is supported?

Have you tried placing the video card into both slots?

I've unplugged everything and did it all over again and it seems to work this time- only one thing still bothering me. Sometimes the keyboard and mouse register on the ram check screen and sometimes they don't. When they register it picks up 2 mice and 1 keyboard (I only have one of each plugged in) and when it doesn't register it only picks up 1 mouse (probably some ghost mouse that doesn't exist).

Thanks for all of your replies.

Good to hear. Is there a setting in the system bios reset hardware detection? Does this happen on all of the USB ports? Are they on the USB 3 ports?

Hey there, the OP is my brother and just wanted to mention that he figured out it was a messed up keyboard and not messed up USB ports. Thanks for everyone's help!

Indeed. I've been spending almost every waking moment trying to demystify other unrelated computer issues that I've forgotten to wrap this thread up. Thanks everyone!
