I have most of my parts, but I'm still having a tough time deciding between AMD and Intel. For you AMD users, do you notice a real difference when using an AMD system versus Intel? I've always had Intel but am building this new machine (primarily for gaming, have about $2500 to spend) but don't want to have a great game machine that craps out under load if I happen to do a little photo work or just have multiple things open at once. Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

AMD current Athlon64 offerings are better than Intel in all tests except some taks such as video editing. AMD is eceptionally good with gaming and scientific applications. Photo work AMD would manage great.

I am not saying Intel is crap; But AMD's CPU runs cooler with less power consumption. It's stability is as good as Intel. Also it's cheaper. Summing all arguments, as well as everyone here would say, go and try AMD. $2500 is a great deal of money. If you want you might actualyl wait and get a AMD Dual core CPU (Athlon64 X2) The cheapest X2 model is around US$ 500. This dual core offering is much better than the Intel offering. The power consumption of the Intel dualk core chips is 200W! AMD is half that with equvalent performance

you could go for both AMD or Intel....but at the momemt, AMD has the better performance, power consumption and prices.....if your looking to spend 2500 or so on your rig, go for a powerful 3700 or 4000 San Diego...great chip and it has good OC results as well...pair that with some good memory, and your good to go!

If you're going to use your new machine primarily for gaming, then currently, Athlon64 S939 system performs better than Pentium4 systems (including the P4 Extreme Edition), except maybe in QuakeIII at lowest settings.

The Athlon64 is slightly slower than equivalent P4s in photoshop and most video editing, but not by much, and since your new machine's primarily for gaming, then the Athlon64 platform is for you.

Okay thanks everyone, sounds like AMD is definately the way to go. Is it looking like the X2 solution won't be available for individual purchase until August or later? I'll probably just go with the 4000+ San Diego.
