New switch, slow LAN

I just replaced a D-Link DSH-8 10/100 hub with a D-Link DSS-8+ 10/100 switch found in the hotdeals forum. I bought this to maximize LAN bandwith + fileserver throughput, and lessen the amount of collisions I was getting.

With the DSS8 8+ I haven't seen any collisions. But, the time it takes to copy 600mb of data has gone up 3x to 4x. (say 1m30s w/hub vs 4m30s or more w/switch)

I thought switches were supposed to make things faster since there is dedicated bandwith to each port? What can be done to make my network faster?

This switch supports store and forward. Do I have to do any tweaking to the NICs to get them to transfer data faster?
NICs: D-Link DFE-530TX (not the tx+), Linksys LNE-100TX
