New subwoofer problem...

I just put one Pioneer 10" W254C sub into my trunk (w/ sealed q-logic box) with a 230 watt amp. Here's the problem:

With the trunk closed, I can't even tell that I have a subwoofer. However, I can park, push the trunk button to open the trunk, and all of a sudden the sub comes to life and makes it feel like we're having a small earthquake... what in the world can I do to get that same sound with the trunk closed?

I just tried it in the back of the trunk pointing forward and back, and at the front of the trunk forward and back. Sounds a little better at the front of the trunk, but still no where like it should.

Do you hear trunk rattle at all? Is the amp bridged or is it a mono amp? How are the amp volume levels set? What about bass levels/sub levels set within your deck?

What about crossover frequency?

The amp is a Premier X220, bridged, gain is at the little notch that says normal (little more than halfway to max gain). Bass boost is halfway. On the deck, loudness is set at +4. Trunk does not rattle.

Crossover frequency is at about 80Hz~.

According to these specs, the frequency response goes all the way to 2500Hz. Perhaps part of your problem?

d00d you barely have enough power for the sub...
sub runs at 250 Watts Nominal...
The max power of your amp is only 225...your only giving the sub 120watts to turn on with...
with that little of power your not gunna get much thump...
In other words your trying to run a car off AAA batteries 😛 get somethign a little bigger...a cheap option would be a jensen 600 something...

Maybe I should turn the low-passover cut off thing off?

The X220 says 120 watts, but my certification sheet that comes with Premier models says 230 watts after testing...Premiers are very underrated. That still wouldn't account for the way the sub rocks the car with the trunk open..

1997 Chevy Lumina.

Went out and played with the crossovers and stuff, sounds a little better with the low passover not on but still can't feel it unless the trunk is open.

you need a bigger amp.

i have 2 10in Nakamichi subs running off a 350w Nakamichi amp. and its giveing 175 to erach of the subs. theu are a lil underpowered but i dont care cause i dont want my car to rattle apart. mine is also louder when teh trunk is open. but in my case i dont mind so much

You'll want a crossover on, just raise the frequency.

Try facing it in diffrent directions and stuff, i read somewhere that in certain positions the anti-frequency can cancel out ur sub's boom.

well in the case it does have enough power...
u might wanna check out what sound dempening material is in your back seat...
I had to rip a ton out in my car before i started hearing better sounding thumps...also check if ur back seat is pure foam or if there is a metal plate...its something to do with the tickness of ur backseat and how well its sealed...you can suually get around it though by just scraping/ripping/cutting material out where no one will see...
