New Sticky's

I have observed that most of us need to repeat ourselves when someone asks questions about 'how can learn so and so technology' or 'where can i find the best resources for learning so and so technology.'

I think it'll be nice to have a couple of Sticky's for mainstream technologies like Java and .NET where in we can list book reviews, blogs (that are updated regularly), online tutorials, classes, etc.

We can also start a sticky on obtaining and preparing for Certifications. I come from a .NET world and I had to skip through quite a few hoops to understand what was going on. I am sure there are others who can relate, but ultimately it'll be nice to share those experiences and make the job easier for others.

I know this is work more work for you, Mark, but I am sure you'll be OK with the idea if most of us agree?

Well, similar to that idea I was thinking of starting a thread to list online tutorials. I think it would be difficult to make a good sticky that dealt with all the different sources of info a new programmer needs, but we could possibly make one on tutorials, one for books, etc.

I would also like to see some good reviews of books, tutorials, and websites. But I haven't had time to do this myself.

It's funny that I stumbled upon this thread, because I was about to ask a similar question about programming. I know very, very little about it, but I find it very interesting, especially web developing in particular, and I was thinking about asking something like "What are some good resources to introduce me to web development?"

I'll spare you all and do some research on my own, but I'm sure such a sticky would be invaluable.

It couldn't hurt. I vote - we should have a link to w3schools in there - it has several tutorials on web design, and as a reference, it's hard to beat.

And Mark, I don't think we'll need to worry about licensing issues with this one.

This is exactly what I wanted to veer away from. The list you have up to this point is pretty broad and in no way ties to specific languages. We don't want to provide links to e-book sites... on that contrary, we need to post reviews (of our own or links to other people's). As part of that review, we can provide download links (if legal). Of course, we can expand the scope (like you've done with links to OS resources and RF), but I don't think that it will be intuitive to the absolute beginner.

Let's gather more feedback before we take the plunge. I am sure other people have better ideas.

Lots of people have ideas. Fewer are willing to step up and do something concrete. I've stickied chrono's post for now. I am sure the format can be improved on, as can the content. The best way to do that is to post suggestions and contributions in the thread. I'll leave it stickied for awhile and we'll see how relevant it becomes. I agree that for the moment the list is fairly small and not very focused, but also remember that we don't want, and aren't going to have, twelve stickies at the top of the forum. So they will necessarily have to cover a fair bit of ground.

Sure. I just wasn't sure if you wanted us to take the initiative and start something. I have a laundry list of books that I can post reviews and links on.

I'll have something in a few days. Need time to organize my thoughts on how we can do this so that it is intuitive for the ultimate n00bies.

Cool, sounds good. Post them in replies to chrono's thread or PM them to him so he can edit the existing post. Over time I am sure it will evolve into a useful resource.

Book reviews, that's something I didn't think of.

I want to put them in. Anyone have any suggestions on how I should go about doing it? What comes to my mind is to make another category called 'Reviews'. But then having a link + small describtion of reviews after that is going to get messy, once we reach 30 reviews or so.

Or perhaps, I'll just add another enty with the name of the book and in the comment next to it, mention it's a review?

Any thoughts?
