New Steam profile and trading cards, oh my!

http://steamcommunity.com/tradingcards/

Currently in beta and you can either get in from joining the group and waiting till they send you an invite in the order you joined or getting an invite from someone who gets in, they get a few invites to give out.

I joined around the 50,500 mark 🙁

Looks interesting and I look forward to seeing what comes of it.

Oh! And as soon as they start selling "premium" cards, I bet nobody complains at the obvious money grab. You know, because Steam is for gamers and not profits!

What's wrong with this "money grab"? as long as it doesn't affect the games I don't see what the problem is. If you want to buy a card go ahead and do it, if you don't want to pay to display some flashy icon in your profile you don't have to.

Yeah, I'm not really getting that money grab comment. It's a free and optional feature. Don't like it don't use it. Hell you can sell your cards on the Steam marketplace and make some cash off of them if you really want.

And I was going to play some TF2 tonight. Ended up playing Civ5 and Grim Dawn Alpha. Dang it.

As long as premium cards can't be used to get some benefit in the games I'm playing I don't care; just like TF2 Hats.

The cards will just unlock community stuff like profile themes, emoticons for chat, and I read some where DLC for some games possibly (probably hats lol). I think it is pretty cool feature and can dig it. Worse case, if you don't like it you could just ignore it and just sell what cards you get while you play on the marketplace.

Well, worst case they could go towards getting items in a game where collecting is an actual cornerstone of the game (like WoW). Then I'll be really annoyed I have to buy in to the card system to enjoy my collecting in another game.

Why don't they spend less time on pointless gimmicks, and more time fixing the basic functionality of their fetid software. The idiots have broken 'install from disk'. I'm having to wait for two games to download on my painfully slow internet connection, despite owning the disks for both.

Worst DRM ever.

Not pointless to them, it will definitely draw more people to the games, even for a short while.

Sounds like a PICNIC problem. I've never had an issue installing a steam game from disc. Granted I haven't done that terribly often, but once or twice a year.

I'm not saying Steam doesn't have problems that needs attention, but yours is the first I've heard of that one so it might not be as big. I'm much more annoyed at the terrible UI for browsing the store. It needs to be more than just a browser window.

I've really liked Steam for years now, but I must say in the last 6 months the client is getting very very (1 more) very Flaky (maybe because all these "features" are just adding more bloat? I would much rather see that addressed than some silly cards added to it.

If it is a case of just too much junk as a gamer I have to say, just get me to my games, I don't need or want all this extra junk. It's just like the Windows OS.. don't care about what I can do to make the GUI look fancy, I just want the OS as a platform for my applications

Thanks for the headsup on this.

I got in at around 108,000, and it figures that neither l4d nor l4d2 are in the game list.

Yes, It's getting ridiculous. People need to look at it from a different perspective... Consider several years back, before 'friendly DRM' had weaseled it's way into the mainstream. What would we have thought of a DRM that required 100+ MB download just to install? A DRM that takes up 300MB on the hard drive? A DRM that's service uses 85MB of ram? A DRM that controls the installation of the game and all patches?

Well let's see here:

1) Steam is far more than just DRM and I find most of the added features useful

2) 100+ MB download is nothing in this day and age of broadband connections. I can download the steam client in under 10 seconds and have it installed in slightly more time.

3) 300MB on the hard drive is nothing, even on my SSDs that's a minimal amount of space and now I can install games to my larger HDDs as needed

4) If you're worried about 85MB of RAM you need take another look at your system specs, for that matter what other programs use in terms of memory usage. Typical amount of memory in a gaming system nowadays is 8GB so 85MB is a tiny drop in the bucket, much less systems that are starting to become more common with 16GB and up

5) I actually really like the fact that my games are automatically patched so that I don't have to go hunting for the latest patch on the publisher's site so that I can play multiplayer with other people, fix an issue that's been occuring, etc.

I should also probably mention that I cut my teeth playing games like Zork, various MUDs and Doom and overall I like most of the changes that Steam has brought to PC gaming.

You're missing the point.

Sure, some people like the additional features of steam, but if you don't, then steam represents probably the most invasive and resource hungry DRM out there. What if something like starforce used 85MB of RAM? I'm sure people would see that in a very different way. Steam offers NOTHING to me that other apps and programs can't do better, therefore I can't view it as anything other than a horribly bloated (and bug ridden) DRM.

You know Steam has a "small mode" that you can turn on and it uses like 41MB instead.

Comparing it to Starforce is downright laughable. Starforce damaged peoples computers lol. Oh, and if Starforce did use 85MB no one would be fixiated on it except you, because 85MB is a drop in the bucket. I get your point, Steam uses more resources then conventional DRM if you are not going to use the features Steam offers. You also missed his point to some degree, it uses some little resources that complaining about the its very small footprint is funny in the first place. If you are so hard up that 85MB is going to make or break performance on your PC you may want save some cash from buying games and putting it towards some upgrades.

Steam isn't perfect, no one I think ever states it is, but it does what it does well for the overwhelming vast majority of its users. Sure you can get individual clients that can do parts of what Steam does better, but Steam offers a complete package without having to run multiple programs and gives you quite a few options on how you want it to function.

Hey, if you like running a separate chat client, hunting down patches for games and making sure the game is up to date, and having securom/tags/starforce on your computer more then needed then more power to you.
