here it is....

On October 16, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will begin the worldwide release of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace on DVD. The highly anticipated arrival of Episode I marks the first film of the Star Wars saga to debut on DVD.
Enthusiastic fans of the film will be rewarded for their patience. Clocking in at about 480 minutes in length, it features over six hours of additional bonus material, including brand new visual effects sequences executed just for the DVD release.

Here's what the two-disc set will feature:

-The Phantom Menace, mastered by THX for superior sound and picture quality, presented in Anamorphic Widescreen and Dolby 5.1 Surround EX (English), Dolby 2.0 Surround (English and Spanish), and Dolby 2.0 Surround (French, for Canadian release)
-Audio commentary by Writer-Director George Lucas; Producer Rick McCallum; Co-Editor and Sound Designer Ben Burtt; Visual Effects Supervisors Scott Squires, John Knoll and Dennis Muren; and Animation Supervisor Rob Coleman, offering personal insights into the making of the film
-Seven never-before-seen deleted scenes with full visual effects completed just for the DVD release
-"The Beginning" -- an all-new hour-long documentary culled from over 600 hours of footage offering unprecedented access inside Lucasfilm and ILM during the making of Episode I
-Multi-angle storyboard to animatic to finished film feature, that lets you flip through the various phases of development of key action sequences
-Five behind-the-scenes featurettes exploring The Phantom Menace's storyline, designs, costumes, visual effects and fight scenes
-The popular "Duel of the Fates" music video that debuted in 1999
-All 12 parts of the Lynne's Diaries, the web documentaries that first appeared here at starwars.com
-Galleries of theatrical posters, print campaign, and never-before-scene production photos
-Downloaded by millions from starwars.com, the original theatrical teaser and launch trailers, plus seven TV spots including the "tone poems"

Sweet, I knew that the DVD would be packed with loads of extras/features, I'll most likely check the "Hot deals" forum for this one! :)

Did you even read it? looks like a f*cking amazing dvd to me.

And oh yeah, I am well aware of everyone's opinion on this movie. Please keep the discussion about the DVD release and not about how much you hate Episode 1.

Well, my house has a sort of "home theatre" system so my dad will probably just buy the DVD to impress everyone and anyone who comes to our house seeing as though this movie is packed with special effects/great sounds, etc.

Although, I do have one question, why aren't they releasing it in Dolby 6.1 DTS? Gladiator had that and if this movie did it would be even better!

ironic that the release is on my sister's birthday; she doesn't care a bit about star wars :) i hope it's reasonably priced, but as a star wars fan, i'll buy it.

DTS is overrated. I won't get into it too much, but it all depends on the mastering. The TPM laser disc was one of the most amazing things i've ever heard in my life, and it was Dolby Digital. If they use the same sound mix for the DVD.... *spooge*

Also, Lucas sort of owns the whole THX thing and I tihnk they only work with Dolby?

Wow! It looks like the wait was worth it. I can't wait to get it. This will definitely be the DVD to get in the fall.

It amazes me how adding the word official to a already posted thread can make it new lol

What are my chances that the "deleted scenes" are any scenes including Jar Jar Binks being deleted? ;) :D

Oh, and George Lucas can go suck a light saber. He was just waiting around for retail copies of TPM to get bumped down to bargain bins as well as rental copies being stuck on the back shelf of the 5 day $.50 rentals. He was going to suck as much $$$ out of the channels as he could. Gotta maximize those profits ya know.

actually he was waiting until a lot of people owned DVD players to maximize his profit :) there are now about 30 million DVD players (not including DVD-Roms of course) sold in the US. and figure at least 1/4 to 1/3 of those owners will buy this. This DVD will surely break all the records that The Matrix and Gladiator set.

October isn't that far off. It's only 4 months and Ep. 2 is only 11 months off. It'll get here. Relax.

I'm more geeked about the 2nd disk of goodies and behind the scenes stuff. Schweet!

The MSRP has been announced

$29.98 in U.S.

$41.98 in Canada

So in other words, when it comes out you'll probably find it for this at your local best buy (US)/ future shop (canada):

$20-$22 in US

$27-$29 in Canada

In the other thread about this, there was a bunch of hysterical diaper filling about how much it'd cost. Panicked babies were screaming that it would be $60 and that lucas should burn in hell for being so greedy. I guessed they'd be ~$30 and here's the last line of the news release kami quoted (but cut off):

The two-disc set is priced at $29.98 in the U.S. and $41.98 in Canada.

Translation: $24.99 at Beast Buy the first week. C ya there!
