Hello. I'm considering a new SSD for my game rig. With just 111GB or space there isn't enough room for many games. I only have two right now and there is 26GB left. Thinking of going with an Intel SSD these days. I recently picked up an Intel 535 240GB for a friend because their HDD crashed and died. 59$ for a 240GB drive  I think they are all gone now but the lack of space is what's bugging me. How well are the Intel SSD drives comparing these days to the competition?

They haven't released anything new and awesome in a while except for the PCI-E ones. They're pricier, since they're cut down enterprise kit and not consumer-oriented. They might - MIGHT - be more reliable long term, but there's no reason to think that other brands are unreliable.

People seem to be recommending Crucial a lot, Samsung still, and Sandisk too.

Might be worth getting a 512GB if you can afford it. There've been sales lately.

A read-mostly drive such as for game installs, would be the perfect match for a cheap large TLC drive, such as the Sandisk Ultra II drives. The 512 version has been around $109.

Intel makes great SSDs but they're overpriced for their performance in client workloads.

I think Newegg had some of the 960GB versions for $199 this week, too! SanDisk's Extreme Pro's were also on sale...seems like they're trying to clear out inventory?

You should have picked up a second Intel 535 240GB for the price (@Microcenter). They are fast reliable drives.

Although lately i've seen the Crucial BX100 and Samsung 850 EVO 500GB drives for anywhere from $125-$135 range.

I just picked up my 3rd Intel 535 120GB, I use them in client builds for their 5-year warranty and, IME, reliability; I'll probably continue to use them in my own equipment going forward. I've not had problem one from any of them. It's not the fastest, but outright speed isn't required.

Are there better SSD's out there? Probably, but you would have to be splitting benchmark hairs to find them. As was already mentioned, I would look at the Crucials (I have a 512GB M550 and a 120GB M500, certainly the MX or BX are good drives,) but I'm probably done with Samsung based on the failure and subsequent RMA of my 840Pro.
