New SSD, AHCI and Intel RST (RAID) drivers

In preparation for my new Samsung 830 non pro 250g I want to get my current instal of 64 bit Windows 7 up to date so I can clone it over. I'm running a Raid 0 array on a Gigabyte GA45-UD3P.

I'm trying to install the RTS driver from Intel here:

That seems to be the newest version I can find?

Currently my issue is that every time I try to install it, it sort of hoses up my system. It seems to install fine, goes to the end and wants to reboot. That all works right up until Windows starts to load. It goes to the black screen, the dots fly in and morph into the Windows logo then it freezes. After about a minute and a half or so the HDD activity light goes off but nothing happens. I have to push the reset button. CRTL/ALT/DEL doesn't do anything, etc.

I'd like to keep my array for storage after installing the new SSD and cloning my W7 install.

I think the current RST driver is back in the version 8 days so from what I gather from this http://forums.anandtech.com/showpost.php?p=29731860&postcount=4

I need the newer version for TRIM.

Is there a particular process I need to follow to update the driver? Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciate!
 
Try this 🙂

1. Download the 11.7.0.1013 f6floppyx64 version and extract the files to a USB stick.

2. Download the 11.7.0.1013 software package and set that aside (this will be installed after the OS has been installed)

3. Go into BIOS set the SATA to RAID.

4. Turn off the computer and put the new SSD to Port-0, HD/SSD RAID disk 1 to Port-1, HD/SSD RAID disk 2 to Port-2, DVD-ROM to Port-3

5. Go into the RAID OROM setup post boot. and setup a new array or keep your old one etc.

6. Turn off the computer again and remove PWR to the HD/SSD RAID disk's.

7. Boot the computer from the DVD to install Win7 x64, Choose Custom Install, Click Load Driver point it to the USB stick with the RST drivers on it. click next etc install windows.

8. After the OS Installation, Run Windows Update Multiple times to Update the system completely.

9. After the Updates, Install the Intel System drivers 9.3.0.1026, You might have to manually update the drivers in device manager sometimes it doesnt update them with the installer.

9a. Goto Device Manager/System Devices and Universal Serial Bus Controllers

9b. Open System Devices and if you dont know what to manually update then choose each one and choose 'Update driver manaully' point it to the extracted 9.3.0.1026 folder. Do this for all of the USB section also.

10. Turn off the computer re-enable PWR to the HD/SSD RAID disk's (make sure the OS/System SSD Non RAID disk is first to boot in BIOS)

11. Install the RST 11.7.0.1013 Software package that you downloaded earlier. (this is the GUI RAID manager etc for Intel RAID)

12. Install the rest of your system drivers, Mouse, Sound, Video

13. Enjoy 🙂

As soon as my new 840Pro 128G SSDs come in I will be doing a fresh load of Win7 64bit onto my computer. Right now in BIOS I have SATA set for EIDE. I will be changing that to AHCI before loading Win7.

In 3. above you have him setting SATA to RAID. I'll be setting mine to AHCI. When I go to load Win7 I believe I will push F6 and when prompted, have Intel STOR_Win7_8_11.7.0.1013_f6flpy-x64 extracted onto USB drive. Would this be correct?

Then would I also still need the Intel software package to load on after Windows install or is that just if doing RAID (not AHCI).

Now on Intels webpage they say to load STOR_WIN7_8_11.7.0.1013_PV after installing Windows. Is this the post load software you are refering to or is this a post Windows load driver to be installed?
 
Its post windows install, driver and software, But if you used the f6 pre-install driver it wont install the driver since its already installed.
 
Thanks for the fresh in stall procedure Garikfox. I may end up doing that as I just can't get the driver to update and I have NO idea why... 🙁

Sorry for my continued questions, but I want to make sure I do things right the first time with the SSD install. I used to build a new computer for myself each year, but this will be my first change in 2 years and that being just adding 2 SSDs to my computer. I noticed that you also have a Samsung 840Pro 128G. That is what I am getting. One will be for the OS and a second will be for games that I might play more often (though I don't play to many games these days).

First, I am not doing RAID. WIll set my BIOS to AHCI.

I will check the firmware on the new SSDs before changing my computer. Should I also format them at this point?

When loading Windows 7 64 I will use the F6 function to load Intel driver. Windows will have me select the drive I want to load it onto (at this point I will just have the SSD I will install Windows on plugged in). I can then at this point have Windows format the drive. I would think that this is were I have the drive formated instead of before like mentioned above. I am not going to go through the 1024/4096 setup and not worried about the 100M partion that WIndows will create.

Was wondering if that's how SSD users have been doing it.

Another question. What is the difference with setting between AHCI and RAID settings for SATA. Does Intel SRT only matter if setting SATA to RAID?
 
Update the 840 Pro before installing anything to it.

The RAID mode will let you use SRT, AHCI wont

And yeah you got it, thats how you install Windows to the SSD

RAID mode is AHCI + mobo RAID functionality (in really old mobos it was actually IDE + RAID functionality). Enabling RAID functionality will slow down the boot process but needs to be enabled if you ever want to use any RAID functionality. Prior to UEFI you could easily switch between them but not anymore, AFAIK you need to reinstall windows to switch between them with a UEFI mobo.

SRT is considered a RAID functionality.

I still can't convince windows to install the RST driver update. I took two sticks of memory out and ran memtest on the two in it with no errors.

Any idea what else to try? I really don't want to do a fresh install but need the new driver for RAID and AHCI.
