As for equipment, you CAN win with subpar equipment. Look at USSR athletes, they fucking dominated everything - and it was a poor ass country.

This is a lie.

Spiked track shoes and aerodynamic bicycle helmets don't get in the way of the boobies during the girl-girl scenes.

I think swimming will be one of the most antipicated sports at this Summer's Olympics. Phelps is going to murder a bunch more records and people are going to want to watch that.

isn't the records being broken thing because of the resurgence of a new type of stroke that had fallen out of use?

Again, I still don't get it.
Why are these suits any different than increased technology in running shoes? Bicycles? Better bow/arrows? Kayaks? or anything of that nature? Should they have outlawed compound bows into competition when they were invented? Or aerodynamic helmets/suits?

Not to mention new tech in skis, bobsleds etc etc in the winter games.

I agree completely. That would be like banning shaped skis because they offer such a turning advantage to straight skis.

One could get rid of suits altogether and let the swimmers work vs nature only.

But that would be indecent.

maybe we could just all close our eyes.

back to topic: i see that suit packs the rudder in tight so it doesn't upset the current as much.

They could just make them swim in VERY cold water...that'd accomplish the same thing...;)

No. If it is a competitive advantage than the owners of said suits should have it and actually guard the technology. It is up to the respective teams to make the most of anything they can.

You wouldn't demand every cyclist use the same bicycle? Every runner to wear the same shoe?

I think it should be banned. It seems like it's significantly better than any other swinsuit out there. I feel like with bicycles there's more parity. I'm not an expert on these matters - just my hunch.

We're supposed to stop all technology? Let's go back to wearing full-size wool swimsuits.

Of course not, but can the other countries easily obtain these suits? Or are they only allowed to those sponsored by Speedo (article seems to insinuate the latter)? Again, I'm not an expert but in the spirit of fair competition --blah blah blah.

You sir are a socialist.
Competition means that another company should make a better suit, or the other swimmers should improve their abilities. This 'Fair Competition' you speak of is an oxymoron.

I'm pretty sure they kept up in the sports technology race, just like they let people starve so they could keep up in the nuclear and space races.

all sports should be in the nude to eliminate any technology component.

I agree, except for sports involving male competitors.
How many female Olympiads do you really want to see in the buck?

umm, gymnasts?

Does that make me a bad person because they're never over 18?

It would have made you a bad person if you had said weightlifting or "women's" USA basketball.

These suits give at most a fraction of a second in most races and speedo isn't the only one that's making them. They were just the first, that caused multiple companies to have to rush and create new suits to compete. Any athlete that's close enough to a world record will not pay for one of these suits. They'll be given them for free. Speedo, TYR, and every other major suit manufacturer sponsor the world's best swimmers.

As long as its available to everyone I have no problem with it.

I really don't understand what the issue is.

That's how it works. Technology advances...?

Should they throw out all the original world records and make people swim naked, since the swim suite affects results?

KT

That only means some people care about it for about 4 hours every 4 years.
And if it wasn't for these LZR suits, even fewer people would care.

Indeed, arguably modern medicine, nutrition, training equipment, even fitness knowledge are all technological products. Just because one is tangible and immediate doesn't make it any different.

There's a lot of talk of how changes in swimming technique are largely responsible..not the suits.

I would be interesting in reading more on that.
