New speakers

First off I want to thank all those that recommeded the Swan M200 2.0 speaker system. They sound fantastic! The build is top-notch too. They are huge, but I am able to overlook that one teensy flaw. 😛 I bought some Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 about a year ago that was a refurb deal for $50. I thought they sounded good, but was constantly annoyed by little things. I did not like the boomy sub. Since I primarily listen to music and rarely game/watch movies this got bothersome. I could never turn down the sub enough. Secondly, there was always a scratchy static when adjusting the volume. About three months ago there developed a break-up in the midrange on the left channel. This really made listening to music unenjoyable. Of course this made the boxes sad. 🙁 So, after lots of research I determined that a 2.0 system was in my plans. Unfortunately, Newegg (the only retailer for this model - in the DFW area) was out of stock and could give no time when they might get them back in. 2 1/2 painful months later they were available for order. I've always used Winamp's EQ to taylor the sound to my tastes (or to make up for the speakers short-comings) and I just did not like the sound that it was giving. So, I turned the EQ off and the sound was amazing. Now, if I want a little more treble or bass I just use the knobs on the speakers themselves. I am now able to listen to hours of non-fatigueing music thanks to the recommendations of AT members. Hats off!

Now, with my new speakers I was curious if the new X-Fi sound card would be worth it to me. I rarely game, that is important, just not a priority. I am currently using an Audigy 2ZS and if I can get a good deal on the X-Fi I would consider it, but not if I will notice ZERO difference.

Haven't heard either Creative card, but my guess is that the newer card would primarily have have a cleaner sound (better DACs and lower noise). For me, that would be a worthwhile upgrade, but I would listen critically to your current rig and see if you are honestly happy with the overall balance of your system or not (does anything bother you about your current system, and do you enjoy listening to music on it for extended periods of time?)

A more substantive upgrade would be to get a quality digital out (e.g. Chaintech AV710) and outboard DAC, but obviously this would probably be much more expensive than an upgrade to an X-Fi Extreme Music:

Thank you for the tech link mshan. That is a very nice (and informative) site. Yeah, I don't want to go the route of seperate pre-amp/amp solution as the Swan's are self-powered. I will be builiding an HTPC later this year (at least that is my plans) and will read up on this site for lots of info and advice. Gaming is not a big part of my life, but I still want that capability and Creative does have the best gaming card. I've heard lots of good things about the X-Fi and was wondering if I could tell the difference for my main usage (music).

Any other advice (or info) would be greatly appreciated! 🙂

The external DAC wouldn't need to have an amp between it and the Swans. It would just take the digital output from the Chaintech card and then convert it to analog.

But yeah, the Chaintech isn't exactly a gaming card 😛

You could go with a two sound crad setup. For instance use the Audigy for gamming and a Prodigy, E-MU, Juli@ or whatever you fancy for music.
