New Speakers!

Just replaced the original paper-cone speakers in my Landcruiser today. They sounded horrible ... broke up badly with any kind of bass and/or volume. The cruiser has the original 7 speaker premium sound system in it. I just replaced the 4 door speakers with 5.25" Kenwoods. Didn't touch the tweeters & mid-range driver in the back. The speakers were chose by what fit & was within budget.

Had to cut the holes in the rear door a bit biger to fit 5.25" speakers. The originals were about 4", but couldn't find anything that fit to replace the factory jobs. And very shallow on both front and rear due to the window hardware.

The guy at Drive In Autosound helped alot in finding stuff that would fit (the guys at Car Toys were useless). He told me that if/when I replace the head unit, I'l also have to find & replace the amp, or cut the rear tweeters & woofer off, as a new head will burn out the existing amp??? I know nothing about car stereos. Sound possible to you guys?

Anyway, it sounds great now ... wondering if I should bother replacing the tweeters & woofer. Will be hard to find the latter I think. It's like a subwoofer, but only about 6" in diameter.

BTW ... the original front speakers were really funky. The cone is inverted wrt a normal speaker, with a plastic grid covering it. Due to the low clearance. Luckily these kenwoods fit (and the window still works!)

I rented a Land Cruiser once from Enterprise and I agree that an upgrade is in order. Enjoy your new system.

They sound bad new also?? I just figured it was because they were 11 year old paper cones that maybe got damp/wet a few to many times. I'd be pissed if I had paid $40K for a car and the stereo sounded like this one did.
