New speakers with old HTIB receiver

I have an 8 year old Sony Home Theater in a box that I am replacing with an Onkyo receiver and Polk speakers. Unfortunately my speakers came in today but the receiver will still be another week. Is there any problem with hooking up my new speakers to the old receiver? The speakers have a nominal impedance of 8 ohms and are rated up to 100W, and the receiver specs say 100W at 3 ohms. As long as I don't turn up the volume too loud can I safely do this?

You should be fine. Any AVR -- even a junky Sony -- should drive a 8 ohm load.
