It's not cheating. It's still easy to f'up a veneer. You still have to get the grains to matchup on the edges and stain/finish it well.

Speakers look great Aharami! The X-CS is a very clear speaker but at the cost of almost being...clinical? I don't know how to describe it. The encore tweeter is much more forward and bright than the older style X-speakers.

They are beasts though...they weigh like 35 pounds each.

I haven't heard the old x speakers, so can't compare. And since I built these for my father in law, I didn't get a chance to do a direct comparison against my GR Research N3s. Didn't sound too bright in my limited testing. FiL is happy with them. That's all that matters.. Maybe I'll build myself some x-cs originals for my living room. It's a pretty straightforward build (compared to the N3 and AV1-RS

building the cabinets out of solid wood (oak/maple/birch/etc) would get pretty expensive fast. Also solid wood isn't as acoustically dead as MDF. Which is why most speaker DIYers build their cabinets out of MDF and then wrap veneer to make it aesthetically pleasing. But thanks for the compliments!

This, there is just no way to get consistant density of planks.Between knots and other organic defects, MDF is far more preferable.
