New speakers considered a health hazard

I just installed my new Creative 5.1 SBS 560 Speaker system, and on the box is the following notice:

WARNING: Handling the cord(s) on this product may expose you to lead, a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling.

Why exactly might the wires contain lead?

They only may contain lead in California. And lead is only dangerous in California.

EDIT: Unless it's flying at you at 2000 feet per second.

If there is even the possability of lead in minute amounts in/on something California requires that warning. As was mentioned, lead in these amounts is only harmful in California.

The EPA is closest to the ears of Cali lawmakers. According to that state there is no action you can take or material on earth not harmful to your health and to be avoided :disgust:

If the cables are tinned, solder has lead in it. No need to worry about it though, I doubt you bit off the tinned bits and ingested the required amount to cause any cells to turn cancerous 😀

There's lead in a lot of similar items: Check the labels on garden hoses and extension cords, etc. You'd be surprised. Technically, people aren't supposed to drink water through a garden hose. God knows how many gallons I drank that way back in school during PE . . .
