I just saw the same thing with these new Celeron's :) All I can say is WOW! AMD is dumping the Duron in favor of processors they have yet to release, virtually giving the low end chip market to Intel. That is if you can call a 1.7GHz low end!

Any guesses as to how high this chip will oc??

What's the difference between the $88 and the $92 one? Are they the same? Are they both socket 478?

One is OEM with newegg's default warranty (30days?) and the $92 one is a retail boxed with most likely the usual 3 yr warranty.
Can't find anything on Intel's site though.

Edit: If it's .13 micron I'll bet at least 2ghz. Maybe even 2266mhz (17x133)

Since XP 1700 is approximately 34% faster than Celeron 1.3. I somehow doubt that this Celeron 1.7 can match up to XP 1700. Yet the prices are the same. Not to mention Duron 1.3 that is faster than Celeron 1.3 as well.
Once Hammer is released it will scorch Pentium 4 according to some preview reviews.

Anyone know a cheap mobo to complement this??

I have used enough celeron and have to say that it has poor memory performance compared to a duron. My celeron 1.2g get like 500mb/sec sandra 2002 bench, my duron 900mhz even thought 300mhz slower is 1gig/sec both using pc133 overclocked to 150mhz!

I know it probably wouldn't be as fast, but the outpost k7s5a w/ 1 gig duron deal for $79 is a better value by far IMO, if the deal still exists. If you want the faster processor, get an XP 1.5 - 1.7 processor for around the same cash, and it would be faster. Outpost has an xp1800 with the same MB deal that would be great for speed and value. I would be skeptical as to the value of this processor unless it would OC well.

This chip is using the .18 micron, NOT .13, so don't bet the farm on overclocking to far. And if you just have to have a Intel :( the look for a motherboard that uses the P4X266A chipset. Go to Newegg and under chipsets look for it.

Also AMD is NOT dumping the duron yet. I think they will also use a rating system on the Duron when they go to .13 micron.

Would rather have a Athlon XP on a Shuttle AK35GTR board. Will be as fast as a P4 setup but cost as little as a Celeron computer.

I've never bought from newegg.com, but they look pretty good. Have any of you had who have bought from them had any complaints?

IMO Newegg is certainly one of the best online parts store. competitive prices (and sometimes the very lowest) and you get what you order quickly. I have bought maybe 10 things from them but never had to return anything so don't know how that works with them.

returning to them is painless. i have even changed my mind on a board, RMA'ed it, and they let me choose another motherboard (within 30 days of course). if you buy another mobo, no need to pay 15% restocking.

newegg is probably the best online vendor.

I'd bet the Tualatin Celeron's are at least as fast as the these new Celerons. The advantage of the PIV core is that it'll run faster(High Clock), but do less work per cycle(Lower Instructions Per Cycle)... A 400MHz speed advantage is probably not enough to cover the PIV core, especially a castrated one.

I'd also think that a morgan duron, at maybe 1.3GHz or so, could give this a run for its money.

It'd be really interesting to see a budget computer shoot out, the contenders:
Tualatin P3-1.2GHz SDRAM
Tualatin CII-1.2GHz SDRAM
PIV Core Celeron-1.7GHz DDR and SDRAM
PIV 1.7GHz DDR and SDRAM

If only I ran a hardware site... <hint><hint>

My Celery 1.1A oc'd to 1.41 Ghz is as good as a P4 1.6 in Sandra Arithmetic benchmarks and almost as good as a P4 2.0 in Multimedia benchmarks. But the lower memory bandwidth of 133 Mhz SDRAM shoots the Celery in the foot. I am certain that the tualatin Celery will trounce the P4 based one in the first two benchmarks given that it has only 128K cache but it'll be interesting to see how DDR bus will salvage the situation.
