ORIG:
Is there a time of year that new lenses tend to come out? Or is it jsut whenever they are ready to be released?

Hoping to get a 12-55 or something like that if it were to ever come out for Canon SLRs. Closest thing is a $800 15-85mm which is a possibility. The thing with 12-XX lenses is that they are all along the lines of 10-20, 12-22, 10-24. I want something with a little more zoom to them. Even a 12-40 would get my money.

UPDATE 1:
Trying to figure out what lense to get next. REad the few posts below. It's not much ;)

Should work with Canon SLRs?

Maybe, but only with an adapter and you will lose Auto focus.

I doubt you'll ever see a ultra-wide angle lens that will zoom as far as your wanting (on APS-C). The optical design would most likely be big, heavy, expensive, and not very practical.

I see ...

Talking to a co-worker, he said that my thoughts on getting the 15-85 might be worth while.

The thing is, for doing things like indoor photos of groups of people (think birthday parties, dinner table shots, etc) would a 12-24 or 10-20 make more sense?

The 15mm setting on the 15-85mm would give me a 14% improvement in FOV from what I have read which is not much better. But the 10mm setting on a 10-24mm lense would give me a 40~45% gain on FOV over 18mm.

Just need ideas on this one. The 18mm setting is a headache for things like close up shots of groups of people. I think that is what i want to resolve right now. Would the 15mm-85mm be good enough for this?

Been looking at these lenses as a possible next lense.

They include 10-24 type lenses, 15-85 type lenses as an upgrade from my 18-55 stock lense and some 18-200mm type lenses as walk around lenses. The thing is, there are items that any of these lenses would be desired. And I don't want a bag full of 6 lenses.

With 15mm on an APS-C sensor you will get an equivalent of 24mm. This translates to a 74 degree horizontal angle of view. This means to cover a space of 6 feet horizontally, you will need to stand approximately 4 feet away. Take a ruler, measure 4 feet from the center of the dining table. That is approximately how far you will have to stand to take a shot with everyone sitting at the table in the shot at 15mm if the table is 4 foot wide.
