My mom is getting her shingles redone on her small house. It was built in 1992.

It's a simple roof, like this: Image

She's opting for 30 year shingles (seems pretty silly, but she wants to)

I just had my roof done a yr ago, but there was alot of wood that needed to be replaced underneath.

I would guess somewhere in the 4-5 thousand $ range for your mother's roof.

The materials to do it well (good shingles, ice n water shield, underlayment, vents, hell-even renting a compressor and nailer) would cost about 1000. Add 1500 - 4000 for labor and disposal. Roofing is cheap if you can do it yourself, but installers make crap loads of money doing the work.
I do my own roofs.

I hired a couple of foreigners to do the roof of my old townhouse which had a similar sized roof. I bought 30 yr architectural shingles for under $400 and had them install it for $1100.

OK good. She was quoted $4000 in a very high labour cost part of Canada. Sounds fairly reasonable then for a recommended contractor by her neighbours.

Sounds a bit high, but not unreasonable. If I paid that in Manitoba I'd be taking a loan, but in BC or Ontario, it'd probably be right.

Depeneds on what is being done.
Things to consider:
Shingles
Decking
Fascia
Hips/Valleys
Rain gutters

I paid $5,800 last week for a new roof. 41 squares. Remove old roof shingles and replace 30 year architectural shingles, replace 3 sheet of plywood decking, remove two old turbine vents, install 70 linear feet of ridge vent, reflash chimney, haul off debris, and remove nails from yard and driveway with magnet. Single story ranch with 4/12 pitch, located in Mississippi.

All I know is drip edge flashing and 30 year shingles. Guess the rest she hopefully is lucky and got a good honest contractor.
