Ok, i am tring to put together a raid array for home storage and i was thinking about the new Seagate Barracuda drives. They use some new "Perpendicular Recording Technology" and a review on newegg says they will only work if you mount them horizontally. Whats up with that? That cant be true, can it?

Drive in question
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3320620AS (Perpendicular Recording Technology) 320GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

Just send me your $1000 and I'll ship you a RAID array that I'll guarantee to work in any position.
HDs, cables and controller card included.

I think they should work if you mount them vertically. But, then again, I don't have one.

Someone willing to drop "almost 1000 bucks on HDs" should not base purchase decisions on reviews at NewEgg. Annecdotal reviews and oppinions can at best give you a starting place for research. A quick trip to the Seagate site says the ST3320620AS "can be mounted in any orientation. "

Will that Areca PCI-E work in an unused (SLi) 16X slot at 8x?

They make PCI-X versions too and I'm probably better off going that route but I have to wonder. :)

And the mounting positions have no such requirement of horizontal only.

Yes, you can drop any speed PCIe card in an x16 slot, or any card in any slot, as long as the card is the same speed or lower than the slot (physical 16x slot and 8x card will work, but not the other way around).

At one time, many hard drives weren't designed to be operated upside-down. This was due to the bearing design. Don't know if that's still the case or not.

That's funny. I never saw that post. I've got an old 56K ISA modem around here that's got way better ping times than any satellite DSL has.:D
