This new drive by Seagate is probably worst one I ever had by them, I love seagate and I been using them all for 9 years but since I picked up thier new 7200.9 series. I had one blow in 12 days and this one is getting pretty hot from just running for 20 mins. I know drives get hot, but I know that is how the other drive went I bet(it seemed like a head crash).

Within 20 mins this drive is unmost unbearable to touch on the sides. And I don't use it a lot at all for massive data transfers, and it is out in the open with an external encousre plugs on it. I took the case off of it, cause i wanted it to exspell heat better. This is so odd. Cause I own most of the series... 7200.7 & 7200.8 and they run so cool and bearly ever get warm...warm is fine, but Hot after 20mins?

Should I call seagate and ask them if I can get another series?

Heh, 7200.9 isn't the new kid on the block anymore ;) The current top end is the 7200.10

Anyways, external enclosures are known for letting the drive get hot, a combination of zero airflow over the drive and possibly poor thermal conduction to the enclosure mean that it's going to get warm. Are you comparing this drive to ones installed internally? If so the internal ones are almost certain to have better airflow over them and probably better thermal conduction to the case.

Yea, that is why i took off the case, Plus, I can't just throw a fan on it, cause it is on top of my case.

no, I am just comparing a drive exactly like this one dying in 12 days over heat. And my hand feeling it burn almost when I touch it. lol, I mean, I can touch it it just feels like I am touch the hood of a car that is been in the sun for a while.

So let's get this straight:

You've got the drive plugged in to power and data cables and right now it's sat on a random surface? You do know that the drives are designed to dissipate heat through the sides into the case? What are the SMART temps like? Seagate rate thier drives for use @ 60*C, as a guide 40*C is where you start to feel pain from the heat.

There are no smart temps, Hence it not being in the case. I have it plugged externally. I mentioned that ealier.

MY 7200.8 which is essentially a 7200.9 runs at 39 load. usually runs around 36.. Right now it's at 35. So put a fan on it and stop whining. I have a fan on mine

I have a 7200.9. The casing doesn't feel hot, but one of the chips on the surface of the PCB can't be touched for more than a few seconds.

My Raptor is in a Nexus Drive a way which keeps it quiet and cool all my other drives including the Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 750GB SATA-II 16MBhI ave Nexus disk twin dampers which help to keep them cool and reduce resonance, I don't hear my hear my hard drives at all.
There is also 2x120mmradiator fans and 2x120mm case fans.

The whole system is very quiet and cool.
The Nexus solutions are very effective and not too expensive.

Like I said, how would you want me to put a fan on it? The only way I could do that, is sticking in the case with the other drives cause they have there own 120mm fan on it. but I want this drive on the outside, cause it is like a portible drive for me. Plus all it holds is music.

I have a 7200.9 160GB and it is running at 29C. You need something that is open but still has an area to conduct heat. I have a 120 mm blowing on my two Maxtors as well as the Seagate so airflow is crucial to hard drive stability and lifetime.

I had a 7200.9 300GB that started making cowbell noises (I'm not kidding) and became inaccessible to the system. Went to take it out and OUCH! It was like 160 degrees.

Let it cool down and plugged it back in and not even five minutes later (making the noise again) it was too hot to touch. Something isn't right.

I would contact Seagate as there were heat issues with recent models. Otherwise, or anyway try slapping a heat sink on it or vice versa such as an Al rack tray or something like this.

Point a house fan at your tower. Even that random breeze will likely keep it cool enough.
Or, replace it with a laptop HD. They seem to be the only type of HD designed to operate without a single bit of airflow.

but there seems to be only one problem, IT only works inside a 5.25 bay by the looks. It seems like it does have the power for the HD but not the data cable, if it had just a IDE to USB I would be fine, but I have to bring that inside the case where I cannot reach the other IDE cables too.

You're running the HDs in what is quite possibly the worst manner you can find. Nothing acting as a heatsink and no active airflow over the drive. What the hell do you expect?

I use 4 of these Seagate 7200.9 HDDs.
2 in each of 2 systems.
2 Antec P180 cases.
Temps are 31 to 36C (stressed).
Case cooling seems to do the job.

Happy trailz,
