New SATA is loud- this normal?

I switched from IDE to SATA recently, and I noticed that my SATA drive is considerably LOUDER than my IDE, is this normal? Just wondering, thanks.

Differences in drive noise are unrelated to whether it's SATA or PATA. There are many models that are horribly loud relative to others. Seagate drives tend to be extremely quiet. Some have very loud hums from the spinning platters, some have very loud seek noise. I personally find it hard to stand a lot of drives because of the high pitched whine they put out.

I have a couple seagate SATA's and they are really quiet, I can't hear then unless I turned the fans off on my system. I literally can't tell if they're swapping or not. I also have an external maxtor SATA that is noticibly louder by quite a bit. When I turn it on, I def. know it's on.

I've heard that with Seagate, anyway, since they stopped supporting the feature that allows the user to control whether the drive is optimised for performance or noise level, they set IDE drives to be slow and quiet and SATA to be fast and noisy. My experience with my two Seagate drives definitely supports this - they're both silent at idle, but the SATA chews away when seeking while the IDE is virtually noiseless.

Well when I turn the pc on it isnt loud at all. I can barely hear it. Once a game is on for a minute, whawoom its loud
