New Router getting MUCH faster response. Can I upgrade to something better though?

We recently moved, and in order to have DirecTV in the main room, I had to put the cable modem / router in a different part of the house, and then connect the TV/DVR/PS3 to a second router (used as a hub) connected to a wifi bridge, which connects back to the main router.

Anyway, until today I had router 1, an older Netgear WNR1000 (N150) hooked up to the cablemodem and doing the routing; and then had the newer router WNR3500 (RangeMax) hooked up as a hub in the main room, with the one port bridge hooked into one of the ports on the 3500, and the TV/DVR/PS3 hooked into the others.

For some reason, I decided to swap the routers today and swap all the settings to make the 3500 my "router" and the 1000 my "hub"

WHAT A DIFFERENCE. Never thought the newer router would be so much faster. Pages load instantly, ping times are lower, etc. Download speeds however, remain the same.

Question for you experts -- What is the best wireless Netgear router I can get on the market under $100 to use as my "main" router and return to using the 3500 as a hub. I am thinking there must be something *even* faster than the 3500 -- Or should I be happy with my "upgrade" and stick with current setup?

PS I will eventually be adding a 2nd bridge and using another hub in the basement to connect my home theater equipment and printer to the network. So I would be able to use the WNR1000 down there.

Why are you locked into NetGear? Personally, that would only be my go-to choice shopping cost as the main concern giving up everything else. Their 3500/3700 were the only two notable products IMHO and outdated majorly now in a modern network.

what? the 3500/3700 might not be the latest gear, but its still fairly new and delivers excellent performance.

honestly, if you like your 3500 then make your 2nd one a 3700. it doesnt get noticeably faster then that right now.

in a couple more years, the ac routers might be a good buy but from the looks of things, wireless n standard will be widely used for many more years. and yes, the n150 is slow for todays standards. going to a 3500 should have been a huge difference. glad its working properly 😉
