New router disconnects

So I picked up a new router (a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 as mentioned in the summary). Hooked it up, everything worked fine. I watched a little tv after and then when I went back to the computers none had connection. Only way I could get connection back was to power cycle the router and then release/renew the ip from each system. I tinkered a bit in settings, adjusting everything I could think of, then went to bed. By morning I had no connection again. Power cycled, worked fine. 2 hours later no connection. And so on.

It's a basic setup; motorolla cable modem, router, switch, computers. All are wired right now, no wireless. So why do I lose connectivity within a couple hours of no activity?

At which level you loose the connection.

I.e. you can connect to the Router, but no Internet.

You cannot even connect to Router.

Or, and any other abnormalities.

Systems still show their obtained ip's, but they can't reach anything - including the router. No pings, no internet, etc. Release/renews do nothing unless I power cycle the router first. Immediately after power cycling the renews take and everything is back to normal.

The LAN leases are 48 hours, the WAN lease is 24 hours.

Have you checked for a firmware upgrade for your router?

Indeed, and there was a firmware to address some kind of disconnects, though I didn't find out what type. Same problem before and after so far.

UPDATE:

Ok, so I set up closer to the router and watched it. What happens is that I'll be sitting idle for a while then all the back lights (the port lights, WAN and LAN) go out and that's when connection is lost. I still have no idea why, but now I know that the router ports are actually completely shutting down.

I would try to connect to the Router just one computer that I trust.

If it keeping doing acting out, it is time for pushing an RMA, or exchange.

If it works with one computer, I would add a second one and so on.... Until you get to some type of plausible explanation.

Yeah, already tried single system with the same results. This has to be a hardware issue at this point. Guess I'll return it and try another. Thanks for the ideas all.

I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE...OK...I have the EXACT same issues you do, and the symptoms are identical. I have used the latest stock firmware with the same problems reappearing and I have also tried DD-WRT just in case it was crappy stock firmware. The issues continued under DD-WRT.

Conclusion...this router has some sort of hardware flaw. I got so pissed off I tossed it into the trash. No joke. I feel more validated now!

I switched to a Linksys WRT54 GL using the HyperWRT Thibor variant firmware and have had no trouble since.

First, check if you do have any security softwares blocks your connectivity from your 125* High-Speed Mode? Buffalo WHR-HP-G54. Then do a simple test by pingging your router from command prompt. If it replies then go for the firmware upgrade, else makes sure enable the traffic from your security softwares!
