I'm building a new rig at the end of this month, when Intel cuts their CPU prices again (should be on May 26)

These are the parts I'm planning:

Case: Antec SX630 (just bought this)
Mobo: ASUS P4T-E
CPU: P4 Northwood 2.0A
RAM: 2x256Mb Samsung PC800 RDRAM
Floppy: Panasonic
Harddisk: Western Digital 1200JB (120Gb, 8Mb)
DVD: Toshiba SD-M1612
Burner: Plextor 24x10x40A (this comes from my old rig)
Audio: SB Audigy Player
Video: VisionTek GeForce4 Ti4400
Speakers: Boston Acoustics BA4800
Monitor: Sony 19" G420 (from current setup)
Keyboard: Old IBM (no Win keys, from current setup)
Mouse: IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0 (from current setup)

I don't plan on overclocking.

So, what do you think?

Yeah, the BA 7800's should be pretty sweet...

But you're right; I can't get those here (How did you know?)

Edit: From Boston Acoustics site: 'BA7800 are only available through specific Gateway packages'

It sounds pretty good. I wish I had the money to buy this myself... but oh well 1.6a with DDR isn't too bad either:)

I don't find it expensive at all.

When comparing to the rig I build 3 1/2 years ago, this turns out to cost about the same.

Back then my money got me a PII 400MHz with 128Mb 100MHz RAM on an ASUS P2B 440BX board, a 10Gb IBM DeskStar, a Pioneer 24xCD-Rom slot in, a SB Live!, a STB 4400 Velocity TNT 16Mb and the Boston Acoustics MicroMedia System speakers (2.1)

The P4 2.0A I'm getting is actually about $60 CHEAPER than the PII 400 I bought back then. (And this is before the expected pricecut...)

Of course the videocard and the RAM will be more expensive, but I feel like I'm getting A LOT for my money.

Are there any other thoughts on my configuration?

I count on this rig to be plenty fast for my current needs, so I won't be OC'ing from the get go.

Also, I want it to last me a couple of years, so I don't want to risk shortening it's lifespan.

If I want to experiment with OC'ing down the road, what can I expect from this mobo/CPU/RAM setup? (I don't know which clock generators I'll get with the P4T-E)

Are there such a thing as a modest/'safe' OC?
