New rig will not boot up after BIOS changes

I put a new rig together yesterday and booted it up for the first time. It worked fine and I went into the BIOS to change a few items.

Specs:
ABIT KR7A-RAID
AMD XP 2000+
Crucial 256mb DDR 266mhz ECC x 2 (512)
Leadtek GF3

This is the older KR7A-RAID model. In the BIOS, I went to change the CPU speed from the default which was 1500+ to 1900+ to test it. The BIOS only goes up to 1900+ w/o user define. I saved the changes and when it re-booted my screen went blank and the monitor did not come back on though my case fans were still running. I decided to leave it at 1500+ since it seemed to work fine on that setting at that time. I proceeded to load Win98se. After a reboot, I would receive an error message on boot-up that stated something like "please check your processor, press f1 to continue".

Any ideas? Do I need to download a newer BIOS for the 2000+ if available?

i would suggest clearing your bios if you haven't done so already

either take the battery out for 30 minutes or use the clear CMOS jumpers

then, set it to the speed you desire (hopefully 1500) and see if the errors go away

I have cleared the BIOS a few times using the jumper method with no positive results. I just read somthing on Paul's page on VH that states there may be compatibility issues with Crucial 512mb ECC RAM. I am using 2 sticks of Curcial 256mb ECC RAM on this machine. Could the ECC RAM be causing any issues that are related?

what *exactly* does the message say?

wait a sec...this is a 2000 processor and you're only running at 1500? (i didn't read everything last time)

have you updated the bios to the newest version??

That may be it. I see on ABIT's page a new version of the BIOS from Dec. 2001 that has support for AMD XP 2000+. I will have to try that. I bought the board when it was released, so I am betting it has the old/original BIOS release. One question, how do I flash the BIOS with a new board? I have Win98se loaded, but I am unsure if I can boot up to that.
