New rig - USB ports only act as 1.1

Just got an Acer refurb from Geeks; x2 3800, 1G, MCE. Mobo is a Foxconn FC51GM. According to the mobo manual all 8 USB ports are supposed to be 2.0 but when I plug in any device a message appears saying that the device would perform better in a high speed port, but that there are no high speed ports installed. WTF?

MS says all I need is SP2, but all Windows updates have been installed. I've uninstalled the root controller and rebooted to let the OS 'find' the hardware, but the answer is the same. Any ideas?

have you checked your bios settings to make sure it is set for 2.0 - you might have 3 settings - one would be 1.1, then there are 2 others that are confusing as one is called hi-speed or something to that effect which is really 1.1 speed. I am at work so dont remember what the setting should be for full 2.0 speed

Go to microsofts site and directly download and install the USB 2.0 drivers.

My motherboard did the exact same thing and that fixed it.

Edit: I think this fixes that problem: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta...-4956-b7fe-e85b688b7f86&DisplayLang=en

If thats not it you have to find the 2.0 drivers and install them again. Or go to automatic updates and it will update correctly after that. I'm pretty sure thats what I did. I got something off their site that fixed it anyway.

I remember exactly what I did now. Download from that link. Then go to device manager in your computer. And go to the USB and click "update driver". Then windows will find the newest driver and install it.

Just got home from out of town....
Stevf - Yes, the BIOS is set correctly. On my mobo it's 1.1 or 2.0/1.1 so it's set to 2.0/1.1.
tk109 - Thanks for answering! I tried the dl; unfortunately the MS dl only works on SP1 not on SP2. I'll look for the drivers; although I only have one of those @%!#!!* set of proprietary recovery disks.

in Device manager under Universal Serial Bus controllers are any "Standard Enchanced PCI to USB Host Controller's" Listed?

PurdueRy - No, only the Generic USB controller and The Standard OpenHCD USB controller. I guess that means they're all USB1.1 even though they're supposed to 2.0

Clearly I need, according to the latest message, is a high-speed controller for my USB ports. How do I go about getting/installing one? I checked the mobo website for updates and though there is a chipset up date, it only deals with the SATA controllers. I can't seem to find a single or simple mobo driver list or set of files. Am I just too ignorant?

Guys, I really need some help here. I need to install some USB 2.0 drivers for this board, an Acer FC51GM made by Foxconn. I've been to the Acer site and cannot make any sense on there about what I need. I tried to dl the chipset update and everytime the file is corrupted. Is the chipset update what I need? I don't know!

I am absolutely at wit's end. I know just enough to be dangerous but not enough to know where to find USB2.0 drivers and how to install them. If anyone here has a clue, could you please enlighten me? Thanks!

you need to installl usb 2.0 drivers as everyone else stated

it's not on the acer site it should be on the microsoft site i think you can get it by windows updates

edit: come on man I just found out a bunch of info putting usb 2.0 drivers into google it's not that hard please be resourceful.

have the same problem with my ASUS A7N8X-x. i don't know why, but i have to manually install the USB drivers everytime. did your computer come with the mobo CD? request it and look for drivers in Foxconn's site. then install it manually from device manager.

Thank you for your compassion W00t. How could I have missed that I needed to install USB drivers? How stupid of me, even though I said it. Windows update says all my updates are current. Acer says my mobo is one model, Foxconn says it is another, Belarc agrees with Acer, and I can't make any sense of what's on the Acer website. I didn't come to this forum as my first choice. I came here because after quite a while I couldn't figure it out and needed some help. You are so cute to say "I have the answer and I'm not going to tell you; find it yourself" Thanks for the help, W00t, you are such a shining example of the sense of community and mutual help this forum was set up to do. I soooo aspire to your level of expertise and especially to your attitude that you only have to share it with others of the inner circle.

ForumMaster - I would love to install them manually, if I could only find them. I don't have a mobo disk. I have checked numerous USB driver sites and none of them seem to match the mobo as described either by Acer or Foxconn. It is obviously an OEM board since it was a prebuilt rig; Sisoft says it is a FC51GM. My deduction says that "FC" means Foxconn. My searches have only turned up the rig's model number on the Acer site and, as I said, my knowledge stops at the point where I can't match the downloads there with anything I think I have. That's why I came here, to see if the legions of those who know more than I do might have that single scrap of knowledge I need to do it myself.

Niege;

Doesn't the site where you bought the machine from have any type of warr, or support, that can help you out?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you have sp-1, it should have installed the usb2 drivers. If you can't download sp2 from the ms site, just google sp2, and you should find other sites that offer it for dl.

Thanks, SingleAction, I appreciate your help. I bought it refurbed from Geeks. It's supposed to have a 90 day warranty. I checked out the warranty status at the Acer site and the 90 day refurb warranty expired before I got delivery of the rig. That makes me think that this is the second time this one has been refurbed, and not by Acer. I've sent two emails to Geeks - I can't call during their service hours. The last one I got was simply an RMA with no response to my questions. I don't want to RMA this because I've got so much time in setting it up, but I may have to if this problem can't be resolved. They have certainly been of no substantive help.

I already have SP1 and SP2 installed. That's what's so frustrating: this problem should have been taken care of by the original build, or at least the Windows update system, but when I check with Update it says there are no more updates applicable to my machine. That's why I came to this forum in the first place; I used up my knowledge of what to do. Thanks, again, for your efforts.

Niege;

I say get rid of it! If your lucky enough to get an RMA, then send it back. I know, that I'm obsessive when it comes to fixing a problem, and can not easily give up, but I think this machine, was a lost cause from the start! I would not buy anything else from them, because it just sounds like the stuff they are selling is recycled until it sticks!

Buy parts from NewEgg, that confirm to your budget, and build it yourself, it's not that hard, and you will get great satisfaction from it!

I just did that for the 3rd time, and I'm using it now!
