Go with an X2 or a A64. They run a good bit cooler than pentium-4's, and way cooler than pentium-d's(although my 920 was an improvement, still doesnt' run as cool as my X2). Another possibility for a SFF system is a pentium-M, which will run even cooler yet, and still give great gaming performance. I use a pentium-m with an Asus P4P800-VM and the CT-479 adaptor. @2.4ghz it keeps up with my X2 in gaming, and was faster than my 3.82ghz P4. An A64 or X2 would still be easier though, and I have to use an AGP video card with my Pentium-M.

Another question, is if you overclock, and what video card do you plan on getting(since it's far more important to gaming performance than the CPU)?

The only Intel chip I would put in a small system is a pentium-m. P4's and Pentium-D's run too hot to try and keep them cooled efficiently in a SFF or matx case system. Plus as already mentioned, A64/X2 is more efficient for gaming than P4's/pentium-d's as well, and while the pentium-m does quite well at gaming, it lags a little behind in most other things.

Intel Pentium 4 or Pentium D = bad idea for a MATX case, unless you want to pack in a crapload of fans.

As was mentioned, an X2 3800+ or Opteron 165 would be your best bet.
Or if you don't need dual core, grab the A64 3200+ or Opteron 146.

I think AMD 64 single core will fit your bill very nicely. Faster on games than Intel and uses about 25% less power for equal performance.

Hot like fire is right.

I recently got rid of my p4 3.0ghz Prescott and it would get to 170F during menu screens in games. That was with a mid-tower case and an aftermarket copper heatsink/fan. I replaced it w/ an Opteron 165 (with stock cooler - that thing is pretty sweet) and it runs exponentially cooler and performs so much more efficiently. Night and day.

Also do you guys think i' be possible for watercooling to fit in a silverstone sugo sg-1 case (http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=240&num=1) we'll see how it goes haha i stll have a month or so.

Water cooling would probably be a bit tricky in a case like that, but it's not really neccessary anyway, X2's and A64's run plenty cool enough on air.

for the most part, yes. if you get the x2 3800+, then you can expect a min overclock of somewhere around 2.4-2.6+ghz, depending on your mobo, chip, the water block you use, etc.
