Inspired by the article of the Athlon XP and it's benchmark, I am now thinking that it could be a great alternative to f.i. the Dell computers I was presenting in a different thread. There I am most keen on the new Dimension 8200. I picked the one with a P4 1700, that means according to the benchmarks already the Athlon XP 1500+ would beat the Dell and should be the configuration of comparation.
I made myself this list from Newegg.com:
Mother: EPox EP-8KHA+ ...$ 116.-
AMD Athlon XP 1500+ .......$ 122.-
512 MB DDR ......................$ 88.-
IBM 60GXP 60 GB ..............$ 137.-
Cardexp Geforce3 64 MB ..$ 283.-
Viewsonic E95 19" ............$ 229.-
Pioneer 106S DVD .............$ 64.-
SoundBlaster 5.1 Live .......$ 32.-
Altec Lansing ADA 890 ......$ 225.-
3Com 10/100 Ethernet .....$ 33.-
USRobotics V.90/56k .........$ 50.-
Fong Kai case ....................$ 85.-
Keyboard + Mouse ............$ 36.-
-----------------------------------------
Total .................................$ 1.500.-
A similar configured Dell Dimension 8200 would cost $ 2.350.-, a very high difference.
I do not know if I can get parts that easly in Norway, but without doubt it is much to gain with an AMD system and buldiung it at home. The difference makes it easy also to consider the 1800+
