Hey guys, I have about £900 to spend or rather $1300 to spend on a new rig, Just want the tower, got 21 Inch monitor so I?m sorted. At the moment I am using a 2000+ xp, 512 DDR 2700, FX 5600FX, 80 GB HD and it runs fine, hard drive is showing its age. I do a fair bit of gaming, hardly multitask, but I love the system to last, I half feel like just getting a new hard drive and keeping the rest of the pc ( But that would be no fun).

Should I wait for a while or is there anything you guys could recommend with that budget, I don?t like to overclock (call me silly) I just want it to last about 3 years. A DVD burner, decent CPU, fast GPU, LONG lasting hard drive is what I am after, plus the RAM etc.

Any replies would be very much welcomed.

For gaming, go with an Athlon64. Since your not overclocking, I would go with 1 gig of either Corsair value select pc3200 or Kingston valueram. If that 80 gb hard drive has been plenty of space for you, but you really wanna upgrade, go with a 72 gb WD Raptor. Put the rest of your money into a Geforce 6800GT and you should be a happy camper.

What hard drives last longer ?

I feel like mine is slowing, showing its age (3 years) I play alot of MP3's and movies.

Yeah If you know me you'd know I lean towards AMD, not a fanboy but hey.

I've heard the Seagate drives carry a 5 year warranty.

I like AMD myself :) but currently AMD is ahead of Intel in terms of power, but behind in terms of compatibility (not a lot of Athlon MBs have PCI-e yet). Personally, I like Radeon but if Geforce is what you like then stick with a 6800GT. They aren't as expensive as Ultras, require less power and only one AGP slot. Dunno a lot about hard drives though, I usually just get a 7200 160GB one for a hundred bucks and live with it. Most brand name ones are pretty reliable. For much faster MP3 and movie playback though, 10k is the way to go. Expect to spend at least 250 bucks on a 74GB+

For a mid-range gaming system this is pretty good, except I would go 6800NU or GT depending on how much gaming you do (a little future proofing please)

Machine350, Mrvile,Azzy64, Zebo cheers.

I dont mind about GPU , I see the 6800 and X800 Platnum are neck and neck in most benchies so, any ideas ? lol.

Should I wait, 6 months down the line ? seems to me things are pretty slow and no giant leaps in performance seem ahead.

I got about $1,709.8100 to splash ( thanks azzy64) so an FX 55 wouldnt be out of the question.

Zebo would I see a big gap between a 3200 NC and a FX 55 ? or is not worth the money ?

I might go with that spec, spend the rest on Booze.

Hmm I don't think an FX-55 or even a 53 or 51 is necessary, just stick with 3500+ or 3700+ and you'll be fine...I'd spend the extra money on a nice video card instead, X800 XT's and 6800 Ultras are very close, but the Ultra is a bit more expensive. Radeon tends to have better hardware but lower software, vice versa for nVidia.

I'd spend a little more on other things such as RAM and a good DVD Burner (since you seem more multi-media than me)

NO. Unless you call 10% depending on bench "big" , But I do call $200 vs $1000 "big";) 500% big.

Just have a look at all the normalized benchmarks combined...miniscule..

FX53 939 rates 159
3200NC rates 141

Basline is 100 which is AXP 2500

Think i'll settle on the 3200 NC, but what about the GPU ?

6800 V x8000 XT? I cant tell which is faster.

Don't get raptors, they're maybe 5-10% faster. You will not notice the difference.

Well the x800xt will beat it like a Abu Ghraib inmate but at a signifigant price premium. Double price for maybe 30% more performance. What many people are doing is buying a x800pro vivo for $400 and flashing them to x800xtpe.:)
