New rig. Mind looking over it?

Hey guys and gals. I'm planning on building a computer after having my current one for almost 5 years 🙂. I don't intend to OC the comp. The RAM was chosen because it's the cheapest I could find locally. Will the PSU be ok for this system and do you see any problems at all with the configuration? Thanks!

If I only run 1GB of ram, should I use 1x1GB or 2x512mb? I would eventually bring it up to 2GB though. RAM might be changed to Corsair Value Select.

Intel C2D E6300
Mushkin DDR2-667 2x1GB
Gigabyte GA-965P S3
Sapphire X1950 Pro 256MB
Seagate Barracude 7200.10 320GB SATAII
Seasonic S12 430W

Case, DVD-RW will come from my existing computer. Are there any problems adding another SATA HD to run the OS off of?

looks like a very good combo, make sure the memory will work since 965 has a lot of compatibility issues with memory, power supply is a good choice too, seasonics are the best regarding power efficency and its got enough watt for the components.

Is there a lot of difference (price) between the E6300 and E6400? I never considered the 6300 as an option 😛
I really like the Seasonic and the Seagate hard drive is excellent, i got 2 of those in raid and they are fast 🙂

Hi Sombra, in Canada where I am, an E6300 is $209 CDN vs E6400 at $265 CDN. Big enough difference for me 🙂. I don't think you can really tell the difference between the two chips either can you?

Can anyone in Canada recommend a good source for cheap ddr2-667 240pin ram? The mushkin I wanted is no longer in stock 🙁.

For the past couple months and still now its impossible to find cheap RAM.

But it's NOT a good idea for Intel systems, as you need dual channel mode. 😉

Either go with 2x1GB or 2x512MB. With Intel systems, running 4x512MB is not going make your system any slower than running 2x1GB.

If in the long run I end up running 2x512mb and 2x1GB would the system not be any faster than say running all the same size ram in the slots? Does dual channel mode still work in this scenario?

Yes, you'd be fine there too. Just make sure to look in the manual to see where they need to be installed. More than likely, it'll be like this...

slot 1 - 1GB
slot 2 - 512MB
slot 3 - 1GB
slot 4 - 512MB

erm, sry bamacre but dual channel doesnt give u much more performance..believe it or not...or bettter: prove me wrong with links/(non sandra-)benchmarks etc.
