New rig -- cannot use mouse/keyboard once Windows loads

Here's the rundown on the issue. Assembled a new computer last night. Core components:

E6600
Gigabyte P965-DS3
2GB Corsair ValueSelect DDR2-667
Liberty Enermax 500W
HIS x1900xt

1) System POST-ed fine upon initial boot

2) After setting up the BIOS, I proceeded to install Windows XP (note: both keyboard and mouse worked fine throughout this process)

3) After the Windows install completes, I'm left at the desktop. I proceed to install the latest .INF file for the motherboard. Seems to install properly; prompts me to restart the rig. This was the last time that my keyboard/mouse has worked outside of the BIOS.

4) After Windows loads and brings me back to the desktop, both my keyboard and mouse are non-responsive. It has remained that way ever since. The keyboard functions fine in the BIOS. But just prior to Windows loading, my keyboard lights go dark and I can no longer use it nor the mouse.

Things that I have tried since then:

-- reseating the mouse/keyboard USB connections in various orders
-- tried using a PS2 mouse/keyboard; no response
-- clearing CMOS
-- booting from Safe Mode

So, what does this mean? I'm confused as to why the keyboard works in the BIOS, but not in Windows. I don't know if installing the .INF file has anything to do with it or not. An interesting thing to note is that when I reseat the keyboard USB connection while in Windows, the lights on it flicker for a split second, and then they're dead cold again. I mean, a port can't be "dead" if it works in the BIOS, right?

That's very weird... you wouldn't happen to have an old serial mouse laying around you could try out?

I would think the problem would be related to the BIOS and windows fighting for control of the usb devices, but since the ps2 set didn't work I don't know what could be wrong.

I'd try using a powered usb hub (or better yet, a usb bracket). It could be a bad port, or it might just not be getting enough power.

No, no serial mice laying around.

Yeah, it's just weird. Keyboard works fine in BIOS (UBS and PS2), but just... terminates once Windows begins to load. I don't know if I have an issue for RMA since the ports obviously aren't dead. Windows just suddenly doesn't want to use/see them since I've installed the motherboard .INF file.

I think I'll just try to reinstall Windows and see where that leaves me. That will leave the installed INF file alone, right? Where does that install to, BTW?

Is your video driver anywhere in this story? Sounds like a problem I had after installing my catalyst driver. I had to use an older driver to get XP like my k/m. Both went dead right when windows hit the log on screen.

There should be a lot more than a single .inf file to install for the mb.

Yeah, I know. But I can't get that far. Mouse/keyboard crapped out after installing one thing (the INF file).
