new retail p4 3.06

i had a question... are these supposed to have a stripe of thermal goop on the retail heatsink for this chip? cuz mine doesn't have any thermal stuff on the heatsink which seems odd to me. i have some old as2 and was wondering if i should apply some to it? also how do i apply it to this p4? please help asap!

i also noticed that the retail heatsink seems to be a "variable speed fan heatsink" if that will help to clue you in to helping me... whatever that means hehe tia

If you follow this link to 3dGameMan he posts some pics of his new 3.06GHz chip. I noticed that it doesn't have any thermal material on the heatsink. If you read the thread you are bound to get more details.

Note: You may have to regester to read/view the thread.

Retail Heatsinks usally have a thermal pad on them. If so, this is why there is no grease. If it does not have a thermal pad, I'd say YES add the grease to it using your finger with plastic wrap on it and spread a thin layer onto the processor. Dont use your bare finger as your oils will contaminate the ASII. <------------------ thats a hint.

Even if it does have a thermal pad, I would still remove it and us ASII or III. IMHO :)

My 2.4b that I just received yesterday has a pad on the retail heatsink. Not that I am using it. ;)
